Our respected Orthopaedic Surgery practice in Orange County, CA is seeking a Surgery Scheduler / Medical Assistant to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for pre-med students or recent graduates looking to gain meaningful clinical experience alongside board-certified Orthopaedic Surgeons and a Physician Assistant. The position will start as part-time with the potential to become full-time in the near future, as our current surgery scheduler transitions out.
Position Overview:
You will be responsible for assisting with surgical scheduling, coordinating pre-operative requirements, and providing back-office medical assistant support. This hybrid role offers valuable exposure to both the administrative and clinical sides of patient care.
Key Responsibilities:

Obtaining authorization for patient’s surgery

Verification of insurance benefits

Meeting with the patient to discuss their scheduling requirements and communicating with the patient regarding all pre-operative instructions including current medications and precautions for surgery

Provide surgical consents to patient

Arrange for special equipment needed by the physicians

Arrange for assistant surgeons or first assist nurses
-
Assist patients in obtaining necessary pre-operative lab and EKG, verify its completion prior to surgery

Contact other doctors’ offices to obtain pre-operative lab and EKG, if necessary
-
Schedule surgery with hospital or surgery center staff and enter surgery into the master calendar upon completion of scheduling

Schedule post-operative appointment for the patient at the time of surgery

Contact patients on the waiting list to schedule their surgery

Answer all telephone calls regarding surgery and return all voice mails with 24-48 hours

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge and respect for patient confidentiality

Superior customer services skills and telephone etiquette

Ability to handle difficult patients and/or situations with professionalism

Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time in a polite manner

Excellent communications skills: written and oral

Detailed oriented with superior organizational skills

Team player; able to interact with all levels of personnel

Medical Assisting Certification preferred but not required

Will train the right candidate
Job Type: Part-Time to start
