At our medical center, we provide a wide array of services, including internal medicine, ambulatory surgery, audiology and speech pathology, dental care, nursing home services, nutrition, podiatry, prosthetics, women's health, mental health, and rehabilitation medicine. We deliver patient care through an integrated primary care model, ensuring that each veteran is assigned to a dedicated team of healthcare professionals who oversee their treatment both during hospitalization and in outpatient settings.

Position Overview

We are currently looking for a Full-time Hematology Oncologist to join our Specialty Care Medical Service. This physician will report directly to the Hematology Oncology Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage in clinical activities as determined by the VAMC Executive Committee of the Medical Staff's clinical privileging process.
  • Deliver direct patient care, including the evaluation and treatment of hematology/oncology patients, and decide on hospital admissions or outpatient management.
  • Conduct comprehensive initial medical and psychosocial assessments, including physical examinations.
  • Order and interpret necessary diagnostic tests and take appropriate actions based on results.
  • Document diagnostic impressions and refer patients for consultations within the VA and community settings.
  • Provide clinical guidance to patients, families, and other healthcare providers via phone, secure messaging, or mail to coordinate care and offer education.
  • Ensure precise documentation of medical evaluations, interactions, and observations.
  • Supervise and mentor medical residents and students.
  • May oversee mid-level practitioners, such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants.
  • Enter orders for medications, consultations, and testing into the CPRS system.
  • Foster interpersonal and interdepartmental relationships to enhance patient care.
  • Exhibit effective oral and written communication skills, providing education to patients and their families.
  • Adhere to hospital infection prevention policies and procedures, ensuring antiseptic methods are used in all clinical procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor or Chief of Specialty Care Medicine.

Work Schedule

Monday to Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary: Competitive salary with annual performance bonuses and regular salary increases.
  • Paid Time Off: 50–55 days of paid time off annually, including 26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and up to 5 days for CME.
  • Retirement: Traditional federal pension with a 5-year vesting period and a federal 401K plan with contributions up to 5% by the organization.

  • Licensure: Must hold a full and unrestricted medical license from any U.S. state or territory.
  • CME: Potential reimbursement of up to $1,000 per year (must be full-time and board-certified).

  • Contract: No employment contract required, with no significant restrictions on outside work.

Basic Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen; non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA policy.
  • Possess a Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an accredited institution recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Hold a current, unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training in an accredited core specialty program approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, leading to board certification eligibility.
  • Proficient in both spoken and written English.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board Certification in Hematology and Oncology.
