Controls Engineer

Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated Controls Engineer to design, program, and commission industrial automation systems. The Controls Engineer will develop PLC and HMI applications, implement control strategies, troubleshoot systems, and collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and project teams to deliver reliable, safe, and efficient automated equipment and processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, program, and maintain PLC logic and HMI interfaces for new and existing automation projects.
  • Develop control system architecture, including selection of PLCs, I/O, HMIs, drives, and field devices.
  • Create and maintain electrical and control schematics, functional wiring diagrams, and bill of materials.
  • Commission and start-up control systems on-site, performing testing, debugging, and performance validation.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve control system issues remotely and in the field, providing timely root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and process engineering teams to integrate automation solutions into equipment and plant systems.
  • Write clear technical documentation: functional specifications, test plans, operating procedures, and user manuals.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by analyzing system performance and implementing software/hardware upgrades.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, industry codes, and company quality procedures during design and implementation.
  • Provide training and technical support to operations and maintenance personnel on control systems and HMI operation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience designing and programming industrial control systems, preferably in manufacturing or process environments.
  • Proficient in PLC programming (experience with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens, or similar platforms).
  • Experience developing HMI applications and operator interfaces (e.g., FactoryTalk, WinCC, Ignition, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of control theory, PID tuning, motor control, and data acquisition.
  • Familiar with electrical schematics, wiring practices, and industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, ProfiNet, etc.).
  • Experience with commissioning, start-up, and troubleshooting of automation systems in the field.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work cross-functionally in project teams.
  • Willingness to travel to customer sites for commissioning and support as required.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Automation Professional, electrical licensure) are a plus.
