Job Title: Solid Waste Heavy Equipment Operator I

Classification: Non-Exempt

Salary Grade: L5

Reports to: Solid Waste Manager

Date: April 2025


Summary/Objective: Operates various pieces of heavy equipment in the construction and operation of the Daviess County Landfill.


Essential Functions:

  • Inspects equipment daily for safety and maintenance and maintains and cleans equipment and working area; performs routine maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Responsible for safe and efficient transferring, spreading, covering, loading, unloading and/or compacting of waste, soil, debris and/or compost.
  • Performs earth work, including grading and excavating.
  • Monitors incoming waste for evidence of unacceptable waste in materials.
  • Performs and maintains routine records and reports of solid waste disposal activities.
  • Operates machinery associated with the land application facility and auxiliary compost operations.
  • Performs general duties associated with routine grounds and maintenance, operational compliance, and construction activities necessary at the West Daviess Landfill.
  • Must be able to effectively and courteously communicate with drivers, fellow employees, and management via handheld radios and CBs.
  • Has working knowledge of the equipment being operated and immediately reports any equipment problems, safety, or potential environmental issues.
  • Must follow all current and future safe operation requirements.
  • Overtime and weekend work required.

· Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

· Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide with 10s and 100s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

· Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.


Required education and experience: High school diploma or GED. One to two years of related experience and/or training.


Additional eligibility qualifications: Valid Driver’s License; Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A; Tank Endorsement (N) preferred. After employment, operators may be required to obtain a Landfill Operators Permit.
