ORGANIZATION SUMMARY

Girls on the Run of the Shenandoah Valley is a local nonprofit organization that operates in agreement with Girls on the Run International and is dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. We inspire girls in 3rd-8th grade to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Our program currently serves 13 counties and 2 cities (Virginia: Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke, Warren, Winchester, and Harrisonburg City, West Virginia: Berkeley, Jefferson, Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Mineral, Morgan). Each year we have approximately 40 sites that serve 400 girls and 120 volunteer coaches.

Girls on the Run believes that all girls and communities should have access to our programs. We strive to eliminate barriers to participation, to continue creating programming that engages all communities, to be intentional about staff and volunteer diversity, and to promote a culture of inclusion across the organization.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Community Engagement Coordinator is responsible for engaging key audiences through communications, fundraising and marketing initiatives. This position reports to the Executive Director and works collaboratively with program staff to ensure alignment of efforts with program strategy. As part of a three-person team, this position will also directly support program delivery during the peak season. This is a part-time position working an average of 15-20 hours a week, with additional hours during peak times of the year.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Expansion & Site Development

  • Identify and establish new program sites (schools, community centers, recreational organizations) within the Shenandoah Valley region.
  • Build relationships with local schools and community organizations to promote the Girls on the Run program and encourage site adoption.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Program Team to assess and prioritize potential new sites.
  • Manage logistics and oversee site onboarding and implementation of the program.
  • Ensure that new sites are supported in launching successful seasons and maintaining strong program quality.
  • Identify fundraising events and work with Executive Director and marketing committee on planning and execution.

Sponsor & Partnership Development

  • Research and identify potential local and regional sponsors (corporations, foundations, businesses) aligned with Girls on the Run's mission and values.
  • Develop and implement a strategy for outreach, sponsorship packages, and securing financial support or in-kind donations.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with current sponsors and partners to ensure continued support and engagement.
  • Organize sponsor recognition and engagement activities to foster long-term partnerships.



Volunteer Recruitment & Engagement

  • Lead efforts to recruit new volunteers, including coaches, assistant coaches, and event day volunteers.
  • Develop and implement volunteer recruitment strategies through social media, local community events, and partnerships with schools.
  • Provide training, orientation, and ongoing support to volunteers to ensure they feel equipped and supported in their roles.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and motivated volunteer culture that reflects the mission of GOTR.



Community Outreach & Marketing Support

  • Represent Girls on the Run at local events, conferences, and community outreach activities to promote program growth and engage new supporters.
  • Support marketing and communication efforts, including managing social media, drafting newsletters, and helping with local media outreach.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing and Development Committee to ensure the brand message is consistent across all platforms and campaigns.



Data Tracking & Reporting

  • Maintain a tracking system for program site growth, sponsor development, and volunteer recruitment progress.
  • Regularly report on key performance metrics (site growth, sponsorship revenue, volunteer numbers) to the Executive Director.
  • Assist with the preparation of reports for board meetings and funding applications.

Team & Event Support

  • Participate on committees and ad-hoc teams as designated.
  • Support other major GOTR efforts such as the program and the GOTR 5K - personally when applicable and by promoting among volunteers and committees/ad-hoc teams.


QUALIFICATIONS

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in program development, community outreach, volunteer management, or similar fields.
  • Experience working with schools, community organizations, or youth-focused programs is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of fundraising and sponsorship strategies is a plus.

Skills

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Canva, Numbers/Excel, Mac and familiarity with database management tools.
  • Social media savvy and experience with digital marketing tools is a plus.
