Job Description
Position Summary:
Dornier MedTech is seeking an innovative, technically driven Director of R&D to lead new product development across our Endourology portfolio. This leader will guide the design and commercialization of devices supporting stone management and BPH treatment (TURP-related) procedures, overseeing both internal development and external innovation partnerships. The ideal candidate combines deep knowledge of materials science, manufacturing processes, and clinical device performance to bring high-impact urology solutions to market.
Scope of Product Responsibility:
This role covers a comprehensive suite of devices used in kidney stone disease and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) treatment, including:
Stone Management Products:
- Ureteral Access Sheaths (standard and suction-assisted)
- Stone Retrieval Baskets (metal and nitinol)
- Ureteral Stents (short- and long-term, polymeric and metallic)
- Guidewires, Dilators, and Introducers
- Single-use and semi-disposable Ureteroscopes
- Suction-based Lithotripsy Systems
- Laser-compatible accessories (for use with holmium and thulium platforms)
BPH (TURP-Related) Products:
- Continuous Flow Sheaths and Working Elements
- Electrode Systems (bipolar)
- TURP Loops and Accessories
- Irrigation and Fluid Management Tools
This leader will shape Dornier’s long-term roadmap across these categories and scout adjacent opportunities to expand our endourology footprint.
Key Responsibilities:
- Direct end-to-end R&D for both internally developed and externally sourced technologies across plastic and metal-based devices.
- Apply expertise in materials (e.g., polyurethanes, PEBAX, nitinol, stainless steel) and processes (e.g., extrusion, injection molding, laser cutting, RF welding) to achieve optimal device performance.
- Translate clinical use cases from RIRS, PCNL, TURP, and laser lithotripsy into clear technical requirements and robust product designs.
- Drive cross-functional alignment with clinical, marketing, regulatory, and operations teams throughout development.
- Identify and collaborate with external design firms, OEM manufacturers, and technology partners to co-develop or license next-generation products.
- Oversee compliance with ISO 13485, FDA QSR, and MDR regulations via robust design control and documentation practices.
- Lead engineering resources (internal and outsourced) and provide strategic direction across the R&D pipeline.
- Contribute to IP strategy and support patent filings and FTO assessments.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, biomedical, or materials engineering (Master’s or PhD preferred).
- 10+ years of medical device R&D experience with at least 5 years in a leadership capacity.
- Demonstrated success developing Class II disposable urology products for both stone and BPH applications.
- Deep technical proficiency in both materials and manufacturing processes relevant to endourology.
- Familiarity with clinical workflows and unmet needs in stone disease, TURP, and related urologic procedures.
- Experience with external collaboration models, including OEM development and contract manufacturing.
- Strong project leadership, cross-functional communication, and decision-making skills including experience working with international teams or in a global development context.
