Position Title: Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor (CADC)

Department: Clinical Services

Reports To: Program Director / Clinical Supervisor

Location: Butte Horizon Detox

Employment Type: Full-Time / Part-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt




Position Summary



The Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor (CADC) provides direct counseling services and recovery support to clients receiving treatment for substance use disorders at Butte Horizon Detox. The CADC is responsible for facilitating therapeutic groups, assisting in treatment planning, monitoring client progress, and supporting the multidisciplinary clinical team in delivering safe, ethical, and evidence-based care.


This role requires adherence to California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) Title 9 regulations, ethical standards of addiction counseling, and the mission and policies of Butte Horizon Detox.




Essential Duties and Responsibilities




Client Care



  • Conduct client screening, intake interviews, and orientation to the program.
  • Facilitate individual and group counseling sessions focused on substance use recovery.
  • Assist with treatment planning and goal development in collaboration with the clinical team.
  • Monitor client progress and document behavioral observations.
  • Provide recovery education and relapse prevention strategies.
  • Support clients in developing coping skills, life skills, and recovery planning.




Documentation & Compliance



  • Maintain accurate and timely client records in accordance with DHCS Title 9 regulations and program policies.
  • Complete progress notes, group notes, and treatment plan updates within required timeframes.
  • Protect client confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2.
  • Participate in chart reviews, audits, and quality assurance activities.




Program Support



  • Facilitate therapeutic groups including topics such as:
    • relapse prevention
    • recovery skills
    • coping strategies
    • emotional regulation
    • life skills
  • Assist with client case coordination and communication with the treatment team.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case reviews.




Safety and Conduct



  • Monitor client behavior and report concerns to appropriate staff.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, therapeutic environment for all clients.
  • Follow facility policies related to incident reporting and crisis response.





Minimum Qualifications



  • Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) through a DHCS-recognized certifying organization
  • (CCAPP, CAADE, or equivalent)
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Associates or Bachelors degree in behavioral health or related field preferred
  • Knowledge of substance use disorders and recovery principles
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills





Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience working in residential treatment or detox settings
  • Familiarity with ASAM levels of care
  • Experience facilitating psychoeducational groups
  • Experience working with co-occurring mental health disorders





Physical Requirements



  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods
  • Ability to respond quickly to client needs or emergencies
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds if necessary

Work Schedule
