Job Description/Summary

The Medical Assistant supports providers in delivering efficient, high‑quality patient care by managing clinical workflows, rooming patients, obtaining and documenting vital signs, preparing exam rooms, and coordinating patient communication. The MA improves patient flow, reduces provider administrative burden, and enhances the overall patient experience.

Specific Clinical Duties

  1. Administers IM/SQ injections as ordered.
  2. Obtains vital signs and prepares patients for examinations.
  3. Completes prior authorizations and manages medication refill workflows.
  4. Responds to patient messages and supports care coordination across providers.
  5. Triages referrals and assists with patient scheduling needs.
  6. Assists providers during procedures by preparing rooms, equipment, and necessary documentation.
  7. Maintains clean, safe, and properly stocked exam rooms.
  8. Monitors and restocks clinical supplies and inventory.
  9. Ensures clinical equipment is functioning and sanitized according to clinic protocols.
  10. Provides occasional front office support as needed to ensure smooth clinic operations.

Assists Private Practice physicians by:

Core Clinical Duties:

  1. Rooms patients, obtains vital signs, updates medical histories, and documents information accurately in the EHR.
  2. Assists providers during examinations and procedures, ensuring rooms, equipment, and consent forms are prepared.
  3. Manages patient communication, including follow-up calls, care coordination, and timely messaging.
  4. Maintains exam room readiness, conducts sterilization workflows, and ensures inventory and supplies are stocked.
  5. Supports proactive workflow management by reducing patient wait times and ensuring smooth clinic flow.

Additional duties as needed:

  1. Handle complex patient inquiries and resolve issues related to patient care or scheduling.
  2. Patient Education: Answer general questions regarding procedures and providing appropriate resources to patients.
  3. Proactively manage patient flow, minimizing wait times and ensuring a smooth, efficient experience.
  4. As needed performs duties of the PSR to assure appropriate front desk coverage

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Certifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program OR equivalent on‑the‑job training as a Medical Assistant.
  • Current BLS certification required.
  • Medical Assistant certification preferred.
  • Associate degree preferred but not required.

Working Environment

  • Minimum 1 year experience functioning as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting.
  • Experience rooming patients, obtaining vital signs, updating medical histories, and documenting accurately in an EHR.
  • Experience preparing exam rooms, equipment, and consent forms, and supporting providers during examinations and procedures.
  • Experience administering SQ/IM injections.
  • At least 1 year experience with electronic medical record systems (ECW preferred).
  • Experience managing multi‑calendar workflows and balancing competing priorities.
  • Experience communicating effectively with clinical leadership, providers, patients, and external stakeholders.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, clinical workflows, and insurance processes.
  • Proficiency with EHR and practice management systems.
  • Commitment to high‑quality patient care and to Sonoran University’s values.

Success Indicators (First 6–12 Months):

  • Patient wait times decrease and patient satisfaction improves.
  • Documentation accuracy improves with minimal charting errors.
  • Consistent compliance with NRC clinical protocols.
  • Proactive workflow management supports efficient patient flow.
  • Demonstrates reliable communication, teamwork, and consistent follow‑through.

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extensive periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse. Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling of up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Communicate to perform essential functions.

Background/Screening
