Job Description
The Senior Bookkeeper oversees the quality and accuracy of all bookkeeping projects, ensuring compliance with established procedures and best practices. This role combines hands-on bookkeeping work with leadership responsibilities, including reviewing financial records, coaching team members, and providing training to enhance the overall performance of the bookkeeping team. The Senior Bookkeeper collaborates closely with internal stakeholders and external parties to address inquiries, supports continuous improvement of processes, and contributes to a supportive, family-oriented culture in a fast-growing firm.
Responsibilities
- Review and audit all bookkeeping projects to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established procedures and standards.
- Provide clear, constructive feedback and coaching to bookkeepers after completing project reviews, focusing on improving accuracy and efficiency.
- Identify training needs based on review findings and deliver targeted training sessions to the team to address gaps and reinforce best practices.
- Conduct one-on-one training with individual team members when needed to support their professional development and improve performance.
- Perform full-cycle bookkeeping duties as needed, including managing accounts receivable, accounts payable, reconciliations, and general ledger activities.
- Actively participate in daily, weekly, and monthly huddles and meetings to share updates, discuss issues, and support team alignment.
- Respond to questions and inquiries from management, auditors, and regulatory authorities, providing accurate and timely information.
- Collaborate with colleagues to improve bookkeeping processes and workflows, contributing ideas to enhance productivity and quality.
- Maintain organized and up-to-date documentation for all bookkeeping activities and reviews.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the needs of the team and the organization.
Essential Skills
- 3–5 years of experience in accounting, finance, or related fields, with specific experience in accounts receivable and accounts payable.
- 3–5 years of experience and strong understanding of bookkeeping procedures, processes, and nuances.
- Proven ability to perform detailed accounting reconciliations and maintain accurate financial records.
- Strong 10-key skills with a high level of speed and accuracy.
- Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Outlook.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to work with complex spreadsheets and data.
- Solid understanding of tax planning concepts as they relate to bookkeeping and accounting.
- Ability to review and audit bookkeeping work with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to provide clear feedback and coaching to team members.
- Ability to handle questions and inquiries from management, auditors, and regulatory authorities in a professional and knowledgeable manner.

- Experience providing training or mentoring to bookkeeping or accounting staff.

Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of West Des Moines, IA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $31.25 - $32.21/hr.
