Reports To: Principal Engineer
Classification: Full-time, Exempt
Location: On-Site: Texas, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Missouri
Travel Requirements: 75% or more travel for long periods
SUMMARY

As a Substation Protection and Control Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, and commissioning substation protection, control, and automation schemes for our clients. You will be expected to work closely with other team members, suppliers, and contractors.
PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in digital substations; IEC 61850, centralized protection, and digital twin technology.
  • Develop specification documentation employing the Top-Down Engineering approach and utilizing readily available tools.
  • Engage with clients as a trusted advisor to achieve their digital substation objectives.
  • Provide technical guidance to ensure adherence to industry standards and best practices.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and cross-functional teams to integrate substation automation into broader grid management systems.
  • Develop conceptual single-line diagrams and network diagrams.
  • Lead the design, implementation, and optimization of digital substations for our clients.
  • Configure protection relay devices from various vendors, including SEL, Siemens, ABB, GE, and Schneider.
  • Demonstrate proficient troubleshooting skills in protection and control, automation, and relay networks.
  • Develop commissioning procedures for efficient digital substation deployment.
  • Lead onsite testing and commissioning activities.
  • Develop and lead protection and control maintenance training programs.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in digital substation technology and contribute to our innovation initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Must be able to lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds regularly, and occasionally up to 75 pounds.
  • Frequent standing and walking for extended periods, often over uneven terrain or in tight spaces.
  • Regular bending, kneeling, and stooping to collect samples or operate equipment at ground level.
  • Frequent and repetitive motions, such as reaching, stretching, twisting, and turning, are common.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to handle, control, and operate tools, devices, and small components.
  • Occasional climbing on slopes, embankments, or ladders.
  • Must have clear vision (with or without corrective lenses) for close work and distance judgment.
  • Adequate hearing and speech for communicating in noisy environments and hearing site safety instructions.
  • Extended exposure to outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, rain, dust, mud, and noise, for extended periods.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current Professional Engineer (P.E.) licensure.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field with 10 years of power industry experience, or a similar combination.
  • Proven history in digital substation transformation with a strong background in IEC 61850 design, implementation, and long-term customer support.
  • Configuration expertise of protection relay devices from vendors such as ABB/Hitachi, SEL, and Siemens.
  • Passion for renewable energy and sustainable solutions.
  • Excellent listening, reading, communication (technical, written, & verbal), attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to lead and mentor teams in digital substation projects.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel frequently to job sites.
