Job Title: Library Teacher

Job Location: Colorado Springs, CO

Position Type: Full-Time, Exempt

Hours: 7:15 - 3:45, M- F (Two plan periods totaling 90 minutes and duty-free lunch)

Position Summary:

Under the guidance of the building Principal or designated leader, the Librarian fosters innovation and creativity among teachers and students to enhance learning and drive student achievement. Responsible for overseeing all aspects of the school's library technology program, the Librarian leverages diverse information resources to cultivate a dynamic, technology-rich learning environment that empowers both students and staff. Additionally, the Librarian develops and strengthens an effective school library program while upholding library procedures aligned with the school's vision, mission, and goals.

Key Responsibilities:

The Librarian develops and enhances a dynamic school library program, fostering an inviting, accessible, and stimulating environment that supports collaboration, research, reading, technology use, and creative production. Overseeing all daily library functions, they ensure timely assistance and equitable access to research materials, instructional technology, and a diverse collection of books and resources that support learning both in and beyond the classroom. The Librarian implements effective systems for collection development, inventory management, equipment maintenance, and resource replacement while also facilitating access to instructional materials, including online resources. By building strong professional relationships with staff and students, the Librarian fosters meaningful connections and encourages a love of reading to enhance student achievement. Additionally, they instruct students in research skills, guiding them in accessing, evaluating, and synthesizing information, improving their writing, publishing globally, and sharing knowledge. Through clear learning targets, standards-based instruction, and formative and summative assessments, the Librarian supports student success. They also provide training on the library automation system and online research databases, ensuring both students and teachers can effectively navigate information resources. Furthermore, the Librarian offers guidance on intellectual freedom, copyright compliance, and resource challenges, helping students and staff navigate ethical considerations in information use. Actively engaging in professional development, they stay current with the best practices, continually enhancing the library's role as a hub for innovation and learning.

Qualifications:

  • Education and Certification
    • Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field.
    • Candidate must be or able to be endorsed in the content area, passed the PLACE or Praxis test in the content area, and/or have 24 semester credit in the content area to meet Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) "highly qualified" status.
  • Experience:
    • Previous teaching experience (preferably in elementary education) is a plus.
    • Experience working with diverse student populations, including those with special needs, is beneficial.
    • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and competence in all aspects of providing a quality library program and services to staff and students.
  • Strong classroom management skills.
  • Patience, creativity, and a passion for working with children.
  • Ability to design and implement effective instructional strategies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and families.
  • Familiarity with educational technology tools and platforms.

Working Conditions:

  • Classroom-based environment.
  • Occasional after-school or evening events (e.g., music shows, exhibitions, parent nights).
  • Two plan periods per day (90 minutes total).
  • Duty free lunch period.
  • Friday students leave at 1:30 p.m. to allow for Professional Development or to prepare for the next week.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials (e.g., books, classroom supplies).
  • Ability to work with students in a classroom environment will require active engagement and movement.
