Job Description
The purpose of the position is install, maintain, and repair the University's electrical systems and equipment, to troubleshoot power and equipment failures, to ensure lighting systems meet the educational use requirements, perform inspections, installations, maintenance and replacement of electrical components in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations, institutional standards and applicable local, state and federal codes and regulations. The position requires knowledge of both preventive and applied maintenance techniques related to electrical systems. The master electrician will be required to establish, assign and adjust work methods and procedures to meet schedules using knowledge of capacities and capabilities of institutional personnel and equipment and available contractors. It is this position's responsibility to ensure availability of supplies, equipment, and contractors for assignments and the completion of said assignments are done in a safe, proper, timely manner and in accordance with codes and regulations. The position will occasionally be assigned snow and ice removal duties for exterior roadways and sidewalks.
Required Minimum Training and Experience:

Requires a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent. University or vocational school course work with emphasis in electrical or mechanical engineering or any equivalent combination of experience, education or training which provides the appropriate knowledge.

Completion of a union, private (in-house), military, or trade school apprenticeship program that includes theory and on-the-job work.

Minimum of five (5) years' experience as a licensed Journeyman electrician with increasing levels of responsibility.

Equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education will be considered.

Knowledge of Wisconsin State and National Electrical codes & regulations.

Possess certification / license as a Master Electrician as prescribed in the Wisconsin Administrative Code.

Possess a valid (Class D) Wisconsin driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
Specialized Know-How and Skills:
- Ability to complete the following training as required but not limited to: hazardous communication, forklift and aerial lift operation, lock out tag out, fall arrest, confined space, MSDS, asbestos and lead identification, ladder safety, emergency evacuation, respirator training.
- Ability to mentor fellow staff to enhance their performance, development and productivity.
- Ability to work in fast paced, rapidly changing environment and a STRONG work ethic and desire to learn.
- May be subject to bending, reaching, kneeling, stooping and lifting up to seventy (70) pounds.
- May be required to work in locations that involve hazardous environments requiring protective equipment that conforms to OSHA regulations and some physical discomfort due to temperature, dust and noise.
- May be required to work in confined spaces, on ladders and rooftops, and in adverse weather conditions.
- Normal job schedule is first shift Mon – Fri. Receives after hour's calls to perform needed repairs to plumbing equipment / systems. Ability to work variable schedules including weekends, nights, and day shifts as required completing the work in a safe, proper and timely manner with little disruption as possible to the campus community.
Essential Job Functions:
- Perform all essential duties of a Master Electrician, including installing, maintaining, repairing, and modifying electrical systems in compliance with NEC standards.
- Install conduit (EMT, plastic, wire mold) and a wide range of electrical components, including transformers, control boards, circuits, breakers, regulators, switches, and related equipment.
- Install, connect, and troubleshoot motors, lighting, controllers, circuits, machinery, meters, and instrumentation; perform testing and diagnostics.
- Complete additions, extensions, and alterations to electrical systems for power, lighting, heating, and appliances across campus facilities and grounds.
- Inspect, clean, maintain, and repair electrical equipment and motors; replace parts as needed.
- Identify electrical code violations, recommend corrective action, and ensure compliance.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings related to electrical distribution systems.
- Maintain and repair secondary distribution systems and assist with higher-voltage systems, including substations and medium-voltage equipment.
- Install, test, and maintain fire alarm and low-voltage systems (data, voice, security, camera, and access control).
- Coordinate and perform repairs for interior and exterior lighting systems, including theatrical, parking, security, and athletic field lighting.
- Troubleshoot and repair facility and kitchen equipment (e.g., dishwashers, heaters, disposals, freezers).
- Plan installations to optimize material use, ensure maintainability, and meet safety and code requirements.
- Mark underground utilities and maintain accurate records of electrical system changes and repairs.
- Complete work orders, permits (e.g., hot work, confined space), and service documentation; use computers and communication devices for work coordination.
- Respond to routine and emergency service calls; maintain tools, equipment, and a clean, safe work environment.
- Perform limited maintenance tasks in other trades (plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, appliances) as needed.
- Oversee and inspect work performed by contractors, staff, and student workers; provide training and cross-training as needed.
- Support project management activities, including planning, specifications, RFP development, bid review, and vendor coordination.
- Recommend process improvements, safety enhancements, and operational efficiencies.
- Transport tools and materials to job sites as required.
- Assist with snow and ice removal on sidewalks, roofs, and roadways, including application of deicers.
- Promote a culture of safety and environmental responsibility; follow all safety procedures and report hazards.
- Collaborate effectively with team members, management, and stakeholders to complete work in a timely manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
