Position Summary
The Teacher's Assistant (Achievement Specialist) provides direct support to students with developmental and intellectual disabilities in a classroom setting. This role assists teachers with instruction, implements classroom activities, supports individualized learning, and helps students develop academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally.
Essential Responsibilities
- Assist the Special Education Teacher in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
- Support students during classroom instruction, small group learning, and one-on-one activities.
- Help create a positive, engaging, and inclusive classroom environment.
- Assist students with communication, social skills, behavioral support, and daily routines.
- Support students during meals, toileting, hygiene, transitions, and recreational activities as needed.
- Adapt instructional materials and classroom activities to meet individual student needs.
- Monitor student progress and communicate observations to the classroom teacher.
- Assist with classroom organization, cleanliness, and safety.
- Build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Utilize computers and electronic systems for attendance and classroom documentation.
- Participate in required trainings, staff meetings, and professional development.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all school policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Required
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with children, preferably in a school, childcare, or special education setting.
- Experience working with children with developmental or intellectual disabilities is strongly preferred.
- Teacher's Assistant experience.
- Ability to use a computer with basic proficiency.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to bend, kneel, sit on the floor, and actively engage with children throughout the day.
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors.
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and organizational skills.
- Strong commitment to inclusion, respect, and student success.
Preferred
- DCF 45-Hour Child Care Training Certificate or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire.
- CPR and First Aid Certification.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish or English/Creole) is a plus.
