Job Summary
This position is responsible for the maintenance of track infrastructure including: construction, inspection and repair of the track components, and other railroad properties and facilities.
Primary Activities and Responsibilities
- Operate propane torches and electric and gas welding equipment.
- Repair and maintain rail, frogs, rail-ends, turn-outs, switch points, and glue joints using arc, propane or thermite welding processes.
- Perform grinding tasks using power and hand-held tools.
- Inspect welds after grinding to check for hairline cracks or any visible defects.
- Test rail after using thermite welding procedure to detect voids, lack of fusion or other defects in rail.
- Lift and carry track material. Assist in track maintenance when needed.
- Inspect equipment daily to check for leaky cylinders, hoses or connections.
- Clean work pieces to remove impurities, such as slag, rust and grease.
- Operate welding truck in safe and efficient manner.
- Maintain daily records and time sheets.
- Order materials such as welding supplies, grinding stones, reports and safety equipment.
- Comply with company and federal safety rules, policies and procedures to include wearing required safety equipment, responding to safety concerns and taking appropriate action.
- Complete annual training and pass safety and track worker rules examination.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma /GED
- 21 years of age or older
- Valid Driver's License
- Able to read, write and communicate in English.
- One-year welding experience and/or training
- Possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with HAZMAT and airbrake endorsements
Preferred Qualifications
- Welding Certification
- Experience in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and/or Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW)
Basic Competencies
- Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications-both general and technical)
- Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions)
- Reasoning skills (problem solving and trouble shooting skills)
- Mechanical aptitude
Physical Requirements
- Heavy work, lifting up to 70 pounds.
- Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection.
- Stooping/bending/kneeling/crouch/balancing/climbing/holding/grasping/turning and pulling.
- Working/walking on uneven surfaces.
- Sitting/standing for extended periods of time.
- Exposure to equipment that intensifies the heat factor.
Environmental Conditions
Work outside in all weather conditions, on uneven surfaces, around loud noise and fumes at elevated heights.
Shifts/Hours
Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work.
Pay Rate
Full Rate $374.28 per day
Training
Company paid on the job training (which may require travel) provided.
Probationary Period
60 Days
Union Membership
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement, union membership and monthly dues are required.
