Historic Hudson Valley (HHV) is seeking a Year-Round Part-Time Restoration Assistant to help maintain our facilities as part of the Buildings, Grounds & Security Department. The Restoration Assistant would work closely with a Restoration Shop Lead, Restoration Specialist, and report to the Director of Buildings, Grounds, and Security. We are seeking an enthusiastic, reliable and results-oriented individual that is interested in growing with our dynamic organization.
HHV is a Westchester-based cultural non-profit that welcomes visitors to five National Historic Landmarks, including Philipsburg Manor, Van Cortlandt Manor, and Washington Irving’s Sunnyside. HHV offers an array of K-12 school programs, public tours, and seasonal festivals including the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze. The organization has a national reputation for groundbreaking on-site educational programs and award-winning digital content in the areas of Northern colonial enslavement, regional women’s history, and storytelling.
Primary Responsibility: Perform carpentry and mechanical tasks and support the overall success of the maintenance/ restoration department
Principal Duties:
- Perform skilled carpentry tasks
- Perform building restoration and repairs
- Perform basic plumbing and electric tasks, lock, and hardware installations
- Perform exterior and interior preparation and painting
- Assist in the set up and dismantling of special events and education programs
- Assist with grounds work, snow removal and sanding when required
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Demonstrated experience in building craft skills
- Familiarity with tools, equipment, and techniques necessary to efficiently perform assigned tasks
- Proficient in using electrical and manual equipment and measurement tools (powered saws, hammers, rulers etc.)
- Good knowledge of English and Math, and an ability to read construction documents and drawings
- Able to climb stairs, comfortable performing work on ladders and scaffolding
- Good physical condition and endurance, able to lift 50 lbs.
- Willingness to always follow safety guidelines
- Able to work alone or with a team
- Valid drivers’ license
- High school diploma or GED
- Familiar with Microsoft Office
Work Conditions:
- Exposed to varied weather conditions
- Work with various power tools, chemicals
- Extended periods of walking, standing, bending, and stooping
- Travel to other HHV locations
- Weekend, evening, and holiday hours
