Supervised by the Principal, the literacy tutor will have the overall responsibility for tutoring students at Promise Academy in reading and mathematics. The literacy tutor is responsible for improving student's reading skills through systematic reading/ tutoring sessions conducted with Imagine Learning Mypath Reading Intervention instructional materials and mathematics using Edgenuity courses and other instructional materials as required by the Principal.
Rationale: The literacy tutor allows us to provide students with multiple avenues for support through one on-one instruction, varied instructional strategies, and immediate feedback with additional practice (as needed). Based on our STAR testing results, many of our students would benefit from this direct, one on-one reading and math support as they build their skills. Promise Academy integrated the Imagine Learning Mypath Reading Intervention program into our curriculum. Mypath Reading uses STAR assessment data to design adaptive and appropriate learning paths for students. Reading comprehension is crucial for understanding complex texts, performing well on standardized tests, and succeeding in college and future careers.
The literacy tutor is responsible for the delivery of instructional support designed to further Promise Academy's mission to:
- • Recognize each student's right to an education that prepares them for post-secondary success
- • Educate and graduate students that have not been successful in a traditional high school
- • Provide flexible and individualized learning experiences
- • Provide meaningful relationships with caring adults and engaging programming
General Responsibilities
1. Instruction, Student Learning and Assessment
- • Use data about students' learning and performance to deliver instructional support that will close the achievement gap
- • Establish clear reading and math goals for each student
- • Monitor student progress toward goal attainment
- • Match developmentally appropriate instructional strategies with student needs
- • Use resources effectively, including technology, to enhance student learning
2. Content
- • Use varied instructional strategies to teach reading and math concepts
- • Understand school and district curriculum priorities and deliver instruction around those priorities
- • Connect content to relevant life experiences and career opportunities
3. Managing a Safe Learning Environment
- • Create and manage an environment that is conducive to learning for all students
- • Treat all students fairly by establishing an environment that is respectful, supportive and caring
- • Motivate students to work productively and assume responsibility for their own learning
4. Communication
- • Clearly communicate learning goals and progress with students, parents, and administrators
- • Share responsibility with parents/ guardians to support student learning
- • Collaborate effectively with other teachers, administrators, and other school staff
Actual Job Responsibilities
- 1. Report to and work closely with the Principal and seek his/her involvement in educational and instructional decisions.
- 2. Implement the school's RTI and PBIS models with fidelity
- 3. Establish and enforce expectations of student behavior and manage student behavior
- 4. Be familiar with the content in the online curriculum and support materials
- 5. Provide explicit and meaningful instruction to students
- 6. Track and evaluate student academic progress and attendance
- 7. Maintain positive relationships with students, parents, other educators, staff and administrators
