ABOUT THE POSITION

Were recruiting for a hands-on HR Manager to join our mission-driven organization and take the HR operation to the next level as a single-person HR department. In this role youll report directly to the Executive Director and be part of the management team.

Ventures has grown rapidly over the past two years, and this role is a key opportunity to build essential HR infrastructure from the ground up. PURPOSE:

The Human Resources (HR) Manager leads the development and implementation of Ventures human resources operations in support of its strategic goals, hiring needs, and staff retention objectives. As a member of the management team, the HR Manager ensures that Ventures HR systems are compliant, equity-centered, and aligned with our organizational values.

This position serves as the internal point of contact for all HR-related functions, including employment policy, talent acquisition, compensation, payroll coordination, benefits, employee relations, performance management, professional development, and risk mitigation. The HR Manager currently has no direct reports but manages external vendors and may oversee temporary or contract support as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic HR Leadership

  • Advises the Executive Director and leadership team on workforce planning, organizational structure, job design, and compensation strategy.
  • Recommends and develops HR policies and procedures; implements approved programs that align with Ventures mission and compliance requirements.
  • Provides guidance on equity-centered practices in all employment processes.

Compliance and Risk Management

  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws (e.g., ADA, FMLA, Washington State PFML).
  • Maintains required documentation for audits, employee files, and compliance reporting.
  • Represents the organization in HR-related hearings, investigations, or disputes when necessary.

Employee Relations & Culture

  • Advises managers on policy interpretation, staffing challenges, equal employment opportunity, and anti-harassment practices.
  • Facilitates the resolution of employee relations issues, including sensitive matters requiring investigation and conflict mediation.
  • Develops tools and practices to support positive workplace culture and employee engagement.

Talent Acquisition and Onboarding

  • Leads and supports the entire hiring process from job posting through selection and onboarding.
  • Develops inclusive recruitment strategies to attract and retain a diverse workforce.
  • Implements new hire orientation and Year One support systems that ensure employee success and retention.

Performance Management and Professional Development

  • Coaches supervisors in addressing performance, morale, and professional growth.
  • Oversees the performance review process and supports staff with tools for accountability and goal-setting.
  • Partners with the Executive Director on leadership development and organization-wide professional growth strategies.

Compensation, Benefits, and Payroll Coordination

  • Recommends compensation strategies aligned with industry standards and budgetary constraints.
  • Coordinates with the bookkeeper and/or finance staff to administer payroll and benefits accurately.
  • Periodically reviews and updates benefits offerings to ensure competitiveness and alignment with staff needs.

HR Systems and Data Management

  • Oversees HRIS systems and ensures accurate data entry, file retention, and employee recordkeeping practices.
  • Maintains confidentiality and integrity of all personnel data and systems.

General Support

  • Monitors organizational "pulse" through surveys and feedback mechanisms and uses data to inform HR initiatives.
  • Participates in or leads special projects as requested by the Executive Director.
  • Develops and monitors the human resources departmental budget.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible human resources generalist or management experience.
  • Knowledge of Washington State employment law and leave programs.
  • Experience managing HR functions in a nonprofit, Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), or small business environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to mediate disputes, coach supervisors, and advise on HR compliance issues.
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills with the ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining high standards of integrity and confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • HR Certification (e.g., SHRM-CP, PHR).
  • Experience supporting grant-funded roles and working across multiple departments.
  • Experience with Washington State PFML and leave management systems.
  • Experience in implementing or managing HRIS systems.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and HR software systems (e.g., Gusto, Paylocity, BambooHR).
  • Ability to navigate state and federal reporting systems



WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position operates in a hybrid office environment with in-person work required MondayThursday; remote work on Fridays.
Must be able to sit at a computer for extended periods.
Occasionally may lift up to 15 pounds.
May require occasional travel to events or external meetings.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Starting Salary Range: $80,000-$85,000 per year
  • Subsidized Medical insurance 90% of premiums paid for by Ventures, 50% of premiums for partners and dependents
