OverviewSterling Engineering is hiring a hands-on Mechanical Assembly / Engine Test Technician for a manufacturing facility in Winston-Salem. This is a contract-to-hire opportunity on 1st shift with long-term potential. This role is ideal for candidates with strong mechanical, electrical, and troubleshooting experience working on large industrial equipment or engines.
Job Duties
- Assemble and test locomotive engine components and alternators
- Perform mechanical assembly including fastening sub-components and installing hardware
- Route and install electrical wiring harnesses, hydraulic lines, and fuel systems
- Prepare engines for test cell operation (fuel, coolant, hydraulic oil fills)
- Operate engine test cell equipment and perform pressure and performance tests
- Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues to meet quality standards
- Perform preventive maintenance on equipment (air systems, oil levels, filters, etc.)
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and work instructions
- Support paint prep work including masking, sanding, and power washing units
- Move materials and equipment using forklifts and overhead cranes
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in manufacturing, mechanical assembly, or maintenance
- Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics
- Knowledge of hydraulics, fuel systems, and industrial machinery
- Basic computer skills for data entry and documentation
- Forklift and/or overhead crane experience preferred
- Ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
- Strong problem-solving and attention to detail
