CIPE is one of the four core institutes of the National Endowment for Democracy and is an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. CIPE’s key program areas include Enterprise Ecosystems, Democratic Governance, Business Advocacy, Anti-Corruption & Ethics and Trade.

Position: Senior Director, Strategy & Impact
Reports to: Chief of Staff

Scope: This exempt full-time position is based in Washington, D.C. The Senior Director, Strategy & Impact is an integral part of the Innovation & Strategic Engagement Department and will provide strategic leadership and technical expertise to drive innovation in democracy-supporting programming with a focus on strengthening economic resilience and democracies around the world. This role requires a deep understanding of how to leverage the power of the private sector to engage in fighting corruption, upholding ethical business standards, facilitating and encouraging accountable investments in markets, engaging in public-private dialogue to support democratic institutions and drive greater transparency around the world.

The ideal candidate will oversee the strengthening economic resilience and democracies portfolio and budget, creating a strategic approach with clear measurable goals and objectives that will be approved by the Senior Leadership Team. The Senior Director, Strategy & Impact will work in collaboration with the Chief of Staff, Managing Director for Programs, subject matter experts, regional program teams, and functional department heads and experts to identify the programs that should be implemented to achieve strategic objectives consistent with organizational priorities and risk management appetite. This individual will assist with program development, ensure technical excellence, and collaborate with global stakeholders to strengthen economic resilience and democracy worldwide. This role will meet regularly with the subject matter experts and program implementers to ensure strategic priorities are being met, check and adjust when changes are needed, and work with the functional experts to ensure adherence to all reporting, regulatory, financial, and compliance requirements.

The Senior Director, Strategy & Impact for strengthening economic resilience and democracies will also serve as the public face of this effort, championing the work through written publications, external events, and other awareness raising activities that will serve to demonstrate CIPE’s proficiency in bringing measurable change around the world. As part of this externally facing role, the ideal candidate will also work with the Executive Director, Chief of Staff, and the External Relations team on fundraising for the initiative. This individual will also coordinate with the Government Relations and the Program departments to ensure existing donors remain aware of how their funding is being used and that they remain supportive of the organization’s strategy for expanding opportunity.

The Senior Director, Strategy & Impact will be responsible for a wide range of functions, including but not limited to:

General Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership:
    • Develop and implement technical strategies that expand strengthen economic resilience and democracies globally
  • Program Oversight:
    • Lead the design of thematic-focused programs, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, compliance requirements, organizational risk management appetite, and budget
  • Technical Expertise:
    • Provide guidance on strategic priorities to strengthening economic resilience and democracies including private sector to engagement in fighting corruption, upholding ethical business standards, facilitating and encouraging accountable investments in markets, engaging in public-private dialogue to support democratic institutions and drive greater transparency around the world
  • Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Collaborate with governments, NGOs, the private sector and international organizations to advance democratic initiatives. Engage with donors to maintain support and raise additional funding for future programming
  • Capacity Building:
    • Train and mentor teams on best practices in strategic approaches to leveraging the private-sector to build strong, resilient markets and democracies;
  • Policy Advocacy:
    • Support research and policy recommendations that strengthen private sector engagement in democratic institutions globally and reduce corruption, malign influence that distorts markets and weakens democratic institutions
  • External Engagement:
    • Acts as a subject matter expert on strengthening democratic and economic resilience globally and contributes to external panel discussions, webinars, publications, fundraising, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in International Relations/Development, Economic Development, or a related field. Master’s degree, preferred
  • Experience:
    • A minimum of fifteen years of professional experience in international development program management or a related field.
  • Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:
    • Experience with topics consistent with CIPE’s mission, including facilitating the advancement of economic freedoms.
    • Collaborative leader who can create a strategy and work with internal experts to fulfill the thematic strategic priorities.
    • Skilled at relationship building and network development with organizations and individuals.
    • Fluency in written and spoken English required.
    • Effective representation, change management, and leadership skills.
    • Ability to work in a diverse team environment located in multiple time zones.
    • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
    • Demonstrated ability to work with internal functional teams to incorporate organizational compliance, risk, financial, and operational priorities into program design.
    • Strong conceptual, verbal, and written communication skills.
    • Ability to take initiative, organize tasks, and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment, ensuring deadlines are met with attention to detail.
    • Skilled in building strong, trusting relationships to gain support and achieve desired outcomes.
    • Capable of managing multiple competing priorities simultaneously.
    • Flexible and able to engage with individuals at all levels with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Computer Skills:
    • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook required.

THE SALARY RANGE FOR THIS POSITION IS $208,000-$251,000
