Position Overview:


The SMT Operator leads surface mount technology (SMT) operations at Spirit, overseeing all aspects of SMT assembly processes and engineering activities. This role is responsible for SMT manufacturing operations, process improvements, and technical leadership for high-reliability electronic assemblies. The role also requires hands-on engagement and expertise among technicians and in process performance. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in SMT processes within aerospace and defense manufacturing, with a strong focus on quality and compliance.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Develop and implement SMT manufacturing processes and procedures
  • Ensure compliance with IPC standards and military specifications
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives for SMT operations
  • Manage process qualification and validation activities
  • Oversee SMT equipment maintenance and calibration programs
  • Provide technical guidance for complex assembly requirements
  • Develop and maintain SMT process documentation
  • Lead failure analysis and corrective actions for SMT-related issues
  • Support new product introduction and manufacturing feasibility assessments
  • Collaborate with Quality team to maintain process controls and standards
  • Manage SMT materials and equipment requirements
  • Train and develop SMT engineering and technical staff
  • Support customer audits and qualification requirements
  • Analyze SMT process data to optimize performance and yield

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of experience in SMT manufacturing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, preferably in electronics, manufacturing, or related field
  • Extensive knowledge of SMT processes, equipment, and materials
  • IPC certification (CIT/MIT preferred)
  • Strong understanding of military and aerospace quality requirements
  • Experience with high-reliability electronics manufacturing
  • Knowledge of ESD controls and clean room operations
  • Proficiency in process control and statistical analysis
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent project management abilities
  • Outstanding communication skills with ability to interact effectively with customers and cross-functional teams
  • Experience with manufacturing execution systems (MES) and quality management systems
  • Proven track record of implementing process improvements
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements and industry standards
  • Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance
  • Strong leadership and team development skills
  • Commitment to maintaining highest quality standards
  • Experience with J-STD-001, AS9100, and related standards
  • Proficiency in lean manufacturing principles
  • Demonstrated ability to manage in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
