Position Summary

The Cost Accountant is responsible for analyzing, tracking, and reporting the financial impact of operational activities to ensure accurate product costing and informed decision-making. This role maintains cost records, performs variance analysis, supports budgeting and forecasting, and evaluates cost trends to help improve profitability and operational efficiency. The Cost Accountant collaborates closely with operations, supply chain, and finance teams to validate cost drivers, ensure accurate inventory valuation, and identify opportunities for process improvements or cost savings. Strong analytical skills and attention to detail are essential, as the role plays a key part in maintaining financial accuracy and supporting strategic business initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform day-to-day general accounting duties, including preparing journal entries, completing account reconciliations, and supporting month-end close activities.
  • Maintain accurate financial records in alignment with company policies and GAAP standards.
  • Assist with financial reporting and provide ad hoc accounting analysis as needed.
  • Post and apply customer cash receipts accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Generate and distribute customer invoices.
  • Monitor accounts receivable aging and follow up on past-due balances to support healthy cash flow.
  • Support collection activities, including customer outreach and issue resolution.
  • Assist with sales tax calculations, filings, and reconciliations across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Utilize Avalara or similar tax automation tools to ensure accurate tax reporting and exemption management.
  • Collaborate with sales, operations, and customer service teams to resolve billing and payment issues.
  • Identify and recommend process improvements to streamline and enhance accounting workflows.
  • Provide general accounting support in a fast-paced environment as needed.


Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 2–5 years of experience in a general accounting or staff accountant role
  • Solid understanding of basic accounting principles
  • Experience with accounts receivable, invoicing, and cash application
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing needs
  • Experience with sales tax compliance
  • Hands-on experience with Avalara
  • Experience in a multi-entity or multi-state environment
  • Proficiency with accounting systems and Excel
  • Flexible, team-oriented “utility player” mindset
  • Proactive problem-solver with a willingness to learn
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
