Job Title: Mechanical Systems Technician – Unmanned Surface Vessels

Job Description

This role serves as a technical expert for mechanical systems on board unmanned surface vessels and other prototype platforms, ensuring these systems operate efficiently, reliably, and remain ready for on-water testing and evaluation. You will assemble, service, and maintain mechanical and related systems while documenting issues and solutions in a clear, repeatable manner that supports both internal teams and end users.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical expert for mechanical systems on unmanned surface vessels and other prototype platforms, ensuring operational efficiency and reliability.
  • Perform service, assembly, and maintenance on all mechanical systems, including marine engines and diesel engines, to support on-water test and evaluation readiness.
  • Use hand tools and power tools to assemble and repair mechanical components and subsystems according to technical drawings and specifications.
  • Maintain a systematic approach to troubleshooting by identifying symptoms, determining root causes, and implementing corrective actions that can be documented and repeated.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complex mechanical systems in a timely manner to minimize downtime and maintain mission readiness.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams to guide assembly and repair activities.
  • Perform mechanical and electronic assembly tasks, including work with printed circuit boards (PCBs), wiring, and soldering, as required for integrated systems.
  • Contribute input to service and maintenance documentation by following established processes and standards, ensuring materials are accurate, clear, and useful for customer and internal use.
  • Document work performed, including issues encountered, corrective actions taken, and recommendations for future maintenance or design improvements.
  • Collaborate with customers and technical teams to understand system requirements, communicate status, and provide technical guidance.
  • Operate effectively in a high-tempo environment, balancing multiple tasks and priorities while maintaining attention to detail and safety.
  • Support continuous improvement of maintenance procedures and technical documentation by sharing field insights and lessons learned.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3+ years of hands-on experience working with mechanical systems.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing complex mechanical systems.
  • Experience with mechanical assembly using hand tools and power tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Familiarity with marine engines and diesel engines, including assembly and maintenance.
  • Experience with electronic assembly tasks such as wiring, soldering, and working with printed circuit boards (PCBs).
  • Familiarity with technical documentation and reporting standards for government or military applications.
  • Ability to perform effectively in high-tempo environments and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with customers and cross-functional technical teams.
  • Hands-on, problem-solving mindset with the ability to adapt to dynamic operational environments.
  • Ability to obtain and retain a Secret Clearance.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience supporting unmanned surface vessels or other prototype platforms.
  • Background in developing or contributing to service and maintenance documentation.
  • Comfort working with integrated mechanical and electronic systems.
  • Experience in environments that support government or military programs.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to documenting repeatable maintenance and repair procedures.

Work Environment

This position operates on a first-shift schedule, typically from 5:00 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., Monday through Thursday, providing a four-day workweek structure. Work takes place in a modern facility that opened within the last few years, offering updated equipment and infrastructure. The role involves hands-on work with mechanical and electronic systems, including marine and diesel engines, mechanical assemblies, wiring, soldering, and printed circuit boards. The environment is high-tempo and operationally focused, with frequent interaction between technical teams and test operations. Appropriate work attire is expected to support a safe, professional, and practical setting for mechanical and electronic assembly and maintenance tasks.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Baltimore, MD.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $30.00/hr.
