At Civil Air Patrol, the Director of Safety is the senior safety risk manager for Civil Air Patrol (CAP), ensuring that CAP’s health and safety requirements are implemented as part of a robust safety management system (SMS). The Director of Safety engages, motivates, influences, and advises CAP members and staff to implement the SMS to build a safety culture committed to reducing injuries and illnesses and damage to aircraft, vehicles, facilities, and similar large assets. The position requires close collaboration with functional areas including, but not limited to, Operations, Cadet Programs, Aerospace Education, Logistics, Legal, Human Resources, and Membership.
Salary Range
$130,000 – $140,000 (annually), based on experience and qualifications.
What You’ll Do
This role develops, manages, maintains, and evaluates CAP’s SMS, and serves as the organization’s point of contact for all safety-related correspondence, meetings, and inquiries with federal agencies (e.g., Federal Aviation Administration, National Transportation Safety Board, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, etc.). The position provides guidance, direction and support to CAP Chiefs, Directors, and Program Managers who are responsible for safety enhancements in each of CAP’s mission, operational, and program areas. The Director is also responsible for collaborating closely with Cadet Programs to ensure strong oversight of cadet safety initiatives, recommending mitigating actions and risk controls, and formulating and managing the annual safety budgets.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervises a hybrid workforce team of paid and volunteer staff members responsible for providing safety risk management capabilities to support CAP’s goals in alignment with the mission-vision and core values.
- Provides strategic leadership and coaching to all staff teams; empowers staff, manages performance, activities, and priorities while fostering an environment of collaboration, innovation, and excellence
What We’re Looking For
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in a safety-related field and one year of safety-related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience as follows:
- Three years of education or certification training in a safety-related field plus three years of safety-related work experience.
- Two years of education or certification training in a safety-related field plus five years of safety-related work experience.
- One year of education or certification training in a safety-related field plus seven years of safety-related work experience.
- Nine years of safety-related work experience
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize quantitative and qualitative data from various sources and generate insights and recommendations.
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and persuasively to a broad scope of audiences.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with people at all levels of the organization and across a range of different backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiences.
