Kha'p'o Community School (KCS) is looking for a Special Education Teacher dedicated to serving student needs in a Pre-K-6th Grade dual language educational environment. Key duties include providing special education services to students, engaging with families, working with service providers, and facilitating the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) process. KCS is a dual language (Tewa/English) Tribally Controlled Grant school serving Santa Clara Pueblo. We currently serve approximately 125 families, prenatal through 6th grade, and adult learners. KCS is a school grounded in providing students with rigorous, high-quality educational opportunities that are culturally centered on Tewa language proficiency and interactive, hands-on learning. We support students in their physical and emotional growth as well, valuing student identity and promoting and modeling high self-esteem and confidence.
The Special Education Teacher collaborates with the Director of Instruction, the Assistant Director of Instruction, teachers, and service providers to ensure that students receive an education aligned with their specific learning needs. This position manages student IEPs with the support of Special Education Technicians (as needed). The Special Education Teacher also ensures that activities at KCS follow all state and federal special education regulations.
Applicants for this position must have a bachelor's degree and a NM Special Education Teacher license. Those possessing a master's degree or higher are preferred. Applicants with experience in Native American communities are preferred. Knowledge of Pueblo customs and the Tewa language are not required but preferred. KCS follows the Indian Preference Act of 1934 (Title 25, USC, Section 472) which promotes filling vacancies with qualified Indian candidates - consideration of non-Indian applicants will be made in the absence of qualified Indian candidates. Applicants will be required to pass a comprehensive background check and be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to work at KCS.
