Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and results-driven Forge Shop Manager for a forging operation in the Houston. area. You will be responsible for leading a skilled team of experienced operators, ensuring that production targets are met safely, on time, and within strict quality specifications.
The ideal candidate has a deep technical understanding of metal deformation processes—specifically with carbon, alloy, and stainless steels and a proven track record of optimizing shop floor workflows in a heavy industrial environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Production Oversight: Plan and execute daily production schedules to meet customer deadlines. Monitor furnace temperatures, soak times, and forging cycles to ensure material integrity.
- Team Leadership: Supervise, train, and mentor a crew of forge operators, heaters, and helpers. Manage shift rotations and performance evaluations.
- Safety & Compliance: Enforce rigorous safety protocols (PPE, lockout/tagout, heat stress management). Ensure the shop operates in compliance with OSHA and environmental regulations.
- Process Improvement: Implement Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma methodologies to reduce scrap rates, minimize secondary machining, and improve energy efficiency.
- Quality Control: Collaborate with the Metallurgy and QC departments to ensure all forgings meet ASTM, API, and ISO 9001 standards.
- Equipment Maintenance: Work closely with the maintenance team to schedule preventive maintenance on open-die/closed-die presses, hammers, manipulators, and heat-treat furnaces.
Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum 7–10 years of experience in a forging or heavy manufacturing environment, with at least 5 years in a supervisory/management role.
- Technical Skills: Deep knowledge of open-die or closed-die forging, thermal processing, and metallurgy. Ability to read and interpret blue prints and CAD drawings.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, or Industrial Management is preferred (equivalent hands-on experience will be considered).
- Soft Skills: Strong "shop-floor" presence; ability to communicate effectively with both executive leadership and hourly staff.
- Lean Manufacturing: Prior experience in Lean Manufacturing and process improvement is desired.
- Local Knowledge: Familiarity with the Houston industrial landscape (Oil & Gas, Aerospace, or Power Gen sectors) is a significant plus.
