Your Role: High School Math Teacher

As a High School Math Teacher at Uncommon Schools, you will be part of a dynamic team that empowers students to become self-guided learners. Your passion for mathematics will inspire and motivate high school students, helping them develop a deep appreciation for the subject. You will employ a variety of instructional strategies to cultivate problem-solving skills and critical thinking, ensuring that by the end of high school, students are ready for academic autonomy and college preparatory work.

Key Responsibilities

1. Instruction

  • Teach a Math curriculum that includes Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus, preparing students for Advanced Placement (AP) and collegiate-level coursework.
  • Support students in solving problems and thinking critically.
  • Foster confidence and meaningful engagement with mathematics.
  • Encourage students to construct and justify viable arguments using reasoning, math vocabulary, tools, and postulates.
  • Create a community of self-guided learners where students feel safe, confident, and engaged.
  • Collaborate with the Math department to set academic and engagement goals for students.

2. Data Analysis

  • Meet weekly with your principal and/or instructional coach to analyze trends in student work samples and assessments.
  • Implement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learners in your classroom.

3. School Culture

  • Build positive relationships with students to ensure they feel seen, loved, and heard.
  • Partner with families to provide resources that support their child’s learning needs.
  • Engage in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
  • Participate in weekly, school-wide meetings to cultivate community and model our core values.
  • Collaborate with your grade-level team to develop academic goals and instructional strategies.

Qualifications

  • A demonstrated commitment to supporting students’ social-emotional and academic development.
  • An enthusiasm for collaborating with internal and external partners in the best interest of students.
  • A self-directed learner who actively seeks and implements feedback to improve outcomes.
  • Required Experience:
    • Academic expertise in Mathematics, Science, Technology, Engineering, or related fields.
    • A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban schools (1-2 years experience preferred).
    • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required. Teacher certification is not a prerequisite, but you must meet NJ state certification eligibility requirements.

Compensation

The salary for this role ranges from $56,000 to $80,000. Starting pay is determined by various factors, including relevant teaching experience and education certifications.
