Job Description

Compass Government Solutions is seeking a skilled Occupational Health and Safety Technician (OHST) with a focus in Bioenvironmental Health to support the mission at Nellis Air Force Base. This role offers the opportunity to play a vital part in protecting the health and safety of service members, staff, and patients by identifying and mitigating occupational, environmental, and radiological hazards.

Job Duties:

  • Conduct workplace industrial hygiene surveys to assess occupational, environmental, and radiological health hazards.
  • Collect, analyze, and document technical data for inclusion in occupational, environmental, and radiological health program files.
  • Enter data into the Defense Occupational Environmental and Health Readiness System–Industrial Hygiene (DOEHRS-IH) in accordance with local procedures and requirements.
  • Collaborate with healthcare and safety staff to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Independently perform assigned duties after completing initial government-provided training on protocols and policies.

Training & Support:

The Government will provide on-the-job training within the first two months of employment to familiarize the technician with specific protocols and systems (including DOEHRS-IH). Upon completion, the OHST will be expected to function independently and meet all performance standards and expectations.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Work may be sedentary at times but requires regular standing, walking, bending, and carrying light items (up to 35 lbs).
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods and move throughout the medical treatment facility and base as required.
  • Travel to various sections of the military base, including areas under the responsibility of the medical group, may be necessary.

Qualifications

Required

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Education:
    • Minimum of an Associate’s Degree in Occupational Health/Safety, Core Science, or Engineering Technology
      OR
    • High School Diploma/GED with 4 years of experience in a position with a 4B0X or 43E Air Force Specialty Code
  • Experience:
    • At least 3 years of experience in Bioenvironmental Engineering, Occupational Health, or Industrial Hygiene
      OR
    • Formal college/vocational education plus certification as an Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST) or from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP)
    • At least 1 year of experience using basic sampling equipment, including:
      • Detection tubes/chips
      • Personal air samplers and calibrators
      • Sound level meters and noise dosimeters
      • Environmental sampling equipment
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel at a minimum)
    • Proficiency with standard office equipment (computers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, phones, etc.)
    • Knowledge of general medical ethics, telephone etiquette, and strong customer service skills
    • Ability to plan, organize, schedule, and coordinate activities (appointments, meetings, timelines)
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting
  • Certifications:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA) OR American Red Cross (ARC) (computer-based training does not meet requirements; proof of certification required)

  • Familiarity with and understanding of:
    • Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA)
    • Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)
    • National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) Analytical Methods & Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards
    • American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygiene (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) and Biological Exposure Indices (BEIs)
    • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards
    • American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards
  • Knowledge in proper selection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
