Manufacturing — Heavy fabrication and industrial equipment sector delivering welded assemblies and engineered components to energy, transportation, and industrial OEM customers. We build robust, code-compliant welded solutions at scale, focused on repeatable processes, regulatory compliance, and continuous productivity improvements.
Primary Title (LinkedIn top-performing): Welding Engineer
Location: United States — On-site role working directly on the shop floor with engineering, production, and quality teams to drive welding excellence and production readiness.
Role Responsibilities
- Develop, document, and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) to meet ASME, AWS, and client code requirements.
- Qualify welders and welding operators per ASME Section IX / AWS standards and coordinate welder performance tests and certifications.
- Lead root-cause investigations for weld defects using metallurgical analysis and NDT results; implement corrective actions to reduce scrap and rework.
- Design and optimize welding fixtures, tooling and cell layouts; collaborate with production to deploy robotic and automated welding solutions where applicable.
- Partner with Design, QA, and Procurement to ensure drawings, bill of materials, and consumable selections support manufacturability and cost targets.
- Establish welding metrics, drive continuous improvement initiatives (Lean/Six Sigma), and train shop personnel on best practices and safety standards.
Skills QualificationsMust-Have
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering,Materials Science, Welding Technology or equivalent experience (or AS, certification + experience).
- 3+ years experience as a welding/weld process engineer in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
- Hands-on knowledge of welding processes (MIG/TIG/SMAW/FCAW/SAW) and practical experience preparing WPS/PQR and welder qualifications.
- Familiarity with welding codes and standards (ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1) and common NDT methods (UT/RT/MT/PT).
- Strong blueprint reading skills, GD T understanding, and ability to translate design tolerances into weld and fixturing solutions.
- Practical problem-solving skills, data-driven approach to defect reduction, and effective communication with cross-functional teams.
Preferred
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or equivalent certification.
- Experience with robotic/automated welding cells, programming or integrator collaboration.
- Knowledge of metallurgy, heat treatment, and weld metallurgy failure modes.
- Exposure to ISO 3834 / ISO 9001 quality systems and supplier qualification processes.
- Experience with CAD (SolidWorks) for fixture design and familiarity with welding simulation tools.
