Job Summary

The Communications Specialist will play a key role within the Retirement Services department to develop and execute strategic Taft-Hartley based member benefits communications that are easy to understand and inspire member engagement. This position blends content development and project management to deliver high-impact communications across multiple channels. The Communications Specialist will work with both internal and external stakeholders to assess membership needs, define messaging strategy, and create materials that meet both compliance requirements and fulfill the department’s communications strategies. The Communications Specialist will track engagement metrics and continuously refine approaches to increase awareness, utilization, and member understanding.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute communications strategies to enhance member understanding of Taft-Hartley retirement programs, including defined benefit pension plans and the 401(k) plan.
  • Act as project coordinator for development of all benefits communications for the Retirement Services department by managing project strategy, and planning, and ensuring all milestones and deliverables are met.
  • Create high-impact content for member presentations, benefit guides, digital campaigns, recurring compliance communications and the member portal.
  • Serve as point-person for coordinating the approval process with the Executive Communications Department for communication materials.
  • Coordinate translation requirements for all content with the Executive Communications Department.
  • Gather and analyze member feedback to improve communication strategies and address information gaps.
  • Develop and manage templates for communicating pension benefits to Union members.
  • Review custom communications written in response to member inquiries.
  • Review and edit communications generated by external TPAs; provide feedback to assure alignment with RS strategies and broader organizational goals.
  • Ensure all communications are compliant with company policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform other relevant functions as necessary or as assigned by management.


Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of member benefits, including regulatory requirements, preferably in retirement benefits.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • High attention to detail and accuracy required.
  • Strong command of the English language as shown through excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills demonstrated through the completion of a writing assessment required.
  • Familiarity with CMS (Content Management System) platforms, email marketing tools, and other communications tools preferred.
  • Proficient graphic design or video editing experience preferred.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications or related field required.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in benefits communication or marketing communications, preferably in the Taft-Hartley space.


Language Skills

  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
