A Brief Overview

The Radiation Therapist Assistant provides support to Radiation Therapists and the Radiation Oncology department within Seidman Cancer Center.

What You Will Do

  • Assists the Radiation Therapists by greeting patients, completing basic patient assessments, answers phones and takes messages.
  • Communicates and collaborates with caregivers to assist in the coordination of patient care, including patient preparation, verifying patient orders, patient education and providing basic instructions to patients to ensure assignments are completed in a professional and effective manner.
  • Participates in patient care, including treatment room setup and clean up, transporting patients to and from treatment areas, lifting patients to and from treatment tables, chaperoning and monitoring patients and removal of soiled linen.
  • Orders, maintains and ensures adequate availability of procedural supplies in patient rooms. Maintains and organizes stock and linens in treatment and device storage rooms.
  • Assists with data entry, documentation and billing in Mosaiq and Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Assists in creating custom immobilization devices for patient treatment procedures.
  • Consistently follows hospital and department standard operating procedures, guidelines for patient identification and safety, policies and protocols while meeting patient satisfaction goals.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Equivalent / GED (Required)

Work Experience

  • less than 1 year Prior experience in a health care setting (Required) and
  • less than 1 year Basic patient care skills (Required)

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Comprehension of foundational radiation therapy principles, including radiation treatment types, technology, equipment, machines (including navigating controls and safety features), devices (including labeling and placement), and supplies. Education provided through on-the job training within the first year. (Required proficiency)
  • Knowledge of radiation therapy basics, including medical terminology. Education provided through on-the job training within the first year. (Required proficiency)
  • Knowledge of and adherence to radiation safety policies. Education provided through on-the job training within the first year. (Required proficiency)
  • Knowledge of computer systems, including Mosaiq and EHR. Education provided through on-the job training within the first year. (Required proficiency)
  • Uses effective communication with ability to listen and read verbal and non-verbal communication cues to professionally and compassionately interact with patients, families and coworkers. (Required proficiency)
  • Applies critical thinking and prioritization of work assignments (Required proficiency)
  • Self-motivated and willingness to learn (Required proficiency)
