The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is seeking an experienced accounting professional to serve in the position of Senior Accountant. CMAP is a mission-driven agency serving 284 municipalities and 7 counties of Northeastern Illinois as the region’s comprehensive planning organization. As the region’s Metropolitan Planning Organization, CMAP manages a diverse portfolio of projects supported by multiple funding sources and stakeholders.
This position will be housed within CMAP’s Finance division and reports directly to the Accounting Principal. The successful candidate will serve as a key steward of the organization’s financial integrity by ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant accounting operations. Core responsibilities include financial reporting, billing, grant monitoring, reconciliations, and month-end closings, with opportunities to expand skills in CMAP’s enterprise resource planning system, Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365). The Senior Accountant will prepare and post journal entries, monitor project and grant activity, and perform analyses, reconciliations, and reporting that align with GAAP and regulatory standards.
CMAP is seeking a detail-oriented, collaborative team member who is eager to strengthen their technical expertise in D365 while working across departments and with external partners. Experience with D365 is preferred, but a strong accounting background and willingness to learn are equally valued. Education and Experience
Required: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
Minimum Requirements for Senior Accountant: Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and applicable regulatory standards.
- Demonstrated experience with financial reporting, reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end/year-end closings.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems; familiarity with Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365) strongly preferred.
- Experience in grant or fund accounting, preferably within a government, nonprofit, or public-sector environment.
- Prior audit preparation and support experience.
- Ability to identify process improvements, implement best practices, and support system or policy enhancements.
Hiring Range for Senior Accountant : $77,087.78-$98,286.78
