Location Dallas, TX | Onsite; Martin Luther King Jr. Branch Library
Compensation & Schedule
• $20.00/hour
• Rotating schedule within branch hours: Monday 9:00 AM–5:00 PM; Tuesday 9:00 AM–8:00 PM; Wednesday 9:00 AM–5:00 PM; Thursday 9:00 AM–8:00 PM; Friday 9:00 AM–5:00 PM; Saturday 9:00 AM–4:00 PM; Sunday Closed
• W2, Full-Time
• Start date: TBD
Role Impact
The Library Public Service Specialist I delivers frontline reference and customer support services that connect patrons to information, technology, and community resources. This role ensures visitors of all ages receive accurate guidance, engaging recommendations, and equitable access to library services. Success is defined by responsive service, strong community relationships, and consistent support of daily branch operations.
• Key Responsibilities
• Provide reference and referral assistance by interpreting information requests and utilizing the online catalog, databases, downloadable content platforms, and internet research tools
• Assist patrons with computers, job searching, digital resources, library cards, circulation procedures, and general technology support
• Build positive relationships with library users, community groups, and local agencies; support outreach and programming initiatives
• Create promotional displays, reading lists, and presentations; assist with program planning and delivery
• Support daily branch operations including opening/closing procedures, shelving, check-in, curbside services, and maintaining a clean and orderly environment
• Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in English, Library Science, History, or related field; OR Associate degree (60 college credit hours) with additional qualifying experience
• Two (2) years of frontline customer service or library services experience
• Demonstrated interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills in a public-facing environment
• Core Tools & Systems
• Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Online library catalog systems and integrated library systems (ILS)
• Research databases and digital content platforms (eBooks, audiobooks, streaming services)
• Internet research tools and web-based resources
• Public-access computer systems and basic troubleshooting
Preferred Skills
• Spanish or additional language proficiency
• Experience working with diverse communities and patrons of all ages
• Enthusiasm for public engagement and community outreach
