- Chairside Assistance: Prepares patients for treatments, assists dentists by handing instruments, suctions, and maintains4-handed dentistry techniques.
- Patient Care: Greets patients, reviews health histories, monitors, and ensures comfort throughout the visit.
- Sterilization & Prep: Sterilizes equipment, sanitizes treatment rooms according to OSHA regulations, and prepares trays.
- Clinical Tasks: Takes and processes X-rays, dental impressions, and may apply topical anesthetics or sealants depending on state laws.
- Documentation: Updates and maintains patient records, including treatment notes and radiographs.
- Education: Completion of an accredited dental assistant program, though some states allow on-the-job training.
- Certification: X-ray certification is typically required; other certifications (e.g., CDA) may be needed depending on the state.
- Skills: Strong communication, interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of dental tools and sterilization procedures.
