Reports to: Lead Operator Depending on Assignment

Classification: Non-Exempt / Full-Time

Salary: $29.59 - $30.77

Grade: 2

Hours: Wednesday – Sunday / 6:00 am – 2:00 pm

General Description:

Under general supervision, performs various operational and maintenance duties in order to keep the treatment water plant operating in a safe and efficient manner; performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Works with the operator and acts as the operator in the operator's absence to ensure the proper operation of the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
  • Makes hourly rounds to remove scum, and other debris from designated areas; ensures operations of wastewater is intact.
  • Collects and stores wastewater samples and makes composite samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Performs routine laboratory tests for wastewater settleability, pH.
  • Performs general maintenance of buildings, ground, and equipment including: mowing, snow removal, painting, general housekeeping, and general maintenance duties.
  • Monitors gauges and equipment, as required; notifies operator or any problems or potential problems.
  • Detects faulty equipment, makes minor repairs, and notifies maintenance personnel of any equipment malfunctions; takes proper steps to protect plant equipment in case of an emergency.
  • Assists in monitoring and adjusting plant equipment, including, pumps, valves, clarifiers, blowers, and drains to plant is in proper working order.
  • Ensuring routine maintenance and cleaning is completed on sewer plant equipment.
  • Utilizes and wears proper protective safety gear and equipment.
  • Performs "confined space" duties.
  • Transferring sludge from digester to digester or mix tank pump scum pits.
  • Assists maintenance personnel in restoring processes and equipment to operational conditions.
  • Operates city-owned vehicles, including trucks and backhoes.
  • Operates personal computer by inputting data.
  • Operates various power tools and hand tools including; mowers, weed eaters, snowblowers and shovels.
  • Maintains the wastewater plant by cleaning, sweeping, hosing floors, cleaning clarifiers and buildings

Minimum Qualifications:

Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Education and Training:

Equivalent of a High School Diploma

License or Certifications:

Valid Driver's License

IEPA Licensure Optional

Experience:

Previous experience or course work in wastewater treatment is desired.

Knowledge and Abilities:

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of plant processes, flow patterns, controls, and the operation of all treatment equipment.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, EPA regulations and safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of the function of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to ensure safe work environment.
  • Ability to utilize a personal computer and understand software and programs utilized in performing duties.

Ability to:

  • Ability to utilize a personal computer and understand software and programs utilized in performing duties.
  • Ability to safely handle various process chemicals, recognize potential hazards, and employ proper procedures and safety equipment.
  • Ability to react quickly and make independent decisions regarding various operating conditions.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather conditions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with those contacted throughout the course of the workday.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other departments, agencies, employees, supervisors and the public.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

There is frequent need to stand, walk and climb; there is need to sit, twist, bend, stoop, talk or hear, use hands to fingers, lift up to and over fifty (50) pounds, and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday. Works closely with hazardous chemicals and materials, mechanical parts, and slow-moving equipment. Position requires climbing ladders and working in confined spaces. Position is subject to overtime and emergency call out. The City of East Moline promotes a drug/alcohol free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing.
