POSITION SUMMARY

Perform health assessments for EEP students. Administer medication and first aid procedures as needed.

This position will work approximately 244 total days each school year (August – Middle of July). This will include the regular school year and the extended school year (summer school).

CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES

Medical

  • Provide nursing and physical screening to students; assess students and implement first aid measures as needed.
  • Assume responsibility for appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, and referral activities for students after speaking with supervisor.
  • Counsel with students concerning problems such as pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and substance use disorder in order to facilitate responsible decision-making practices.
  • Administer daily and PRN medications and nursing care procedures prescribed by student's physician.
  • Initiate emergency procedures for students and staff as needed.
  • Assess students who are ill to determine whether they should be sent home and contact parents when necessary.
  • Monitor any students who are diabetic and keep food service personnel and staff abreast of any specific diet requirements.
  • Coordinate and attend meetings via zoom during school hours between prescriber, parent and student.
  • Work in tandem with clinical supervisor and on-site prescribers to communicate medication changes to parents and to obtain medication refills.

Record Keeping

  • Maintain a daily log of all students seen, sent home, and parents contacted.
  • Maintain communication with students' physicians regarding medication.
  • Monitor health exclusions.

Staff Support

  • Orient the staff and teach specific medical procedures for the evaluation and maintenance of the medically involved students in their classrooms.
  • Present, train, and maintain appropriate standards from OSHA regarding contact with and possible exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious body materials within the school setting.
  • Provide updated health education to staff and students.

Additional

  • Participate in staff meetings, conferences, training sessions and workshops as assigned.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with policies, performance standards and the agency's Mission, Vision and Core Values.
  • Exhibit a positive attitude and maintain friendly and respectful relations with staff, children, and families.
  • Follow procedures for suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Must be a current Illinois Registered Nurse.
  2. It is strongly recommended that the R.N. have a Baccalaureate or Master's Degree.
  3. The ability to work and interact with all school personnel and students in a cooperative, collaborative and courteous manner.
  4. Able to build effective rapport with student population.
  5. Must have effective organizational skills, time management, and flexibility to meet staff and students' needs.
  6. Have a willingness to assume any responsibilities appropriate for the position.
  7. Support the Mission, Vision and Core Values of the agency.
