Position: Controller

Program/Location: CAB Administration/Watsonville Office: 406 Main Street, Watsonville, CA 95076

Status: Full-Time Exempt

Hours per week: 40 hours per week, may include occasional evenings or weekends

Salary Range: $108k-$116k/ year

Benefits: Medical (employee share of cost depending on plan selected), vision, life, dental (employee pays half of dental) insurance, Retirement plan (401K plan after six months), 24 days annual leave to start, and 13 paid holidays per year.

General Duties: Under the direction of the CFO, and in close cooperation with the CAB Executive Team, program directors, coordinators, and human resources, the Controller will prepare, monitor, analyze, and revise program budgets and budget forecasts. Responsibilities include supervision of accounting staff, billing manager, and record keeping of the financial operations of the agency’s fiscal department. Responsible for the production of timely financial statements, budgets, ad hoc finance reports, and financial analysis. The Controller works closely with all management within the organization


Duties and Responsibilities:

· Oversee all accounting, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with GAAP, and Uniform Guides.

· Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements with clear analysis of variances, cash flow, and budget status.

· Lead financial planning and analysis activities, including forecasting, multi-year models, and scenario planning.

· Collaborate with CFO and senior leadership on annual budget development and ongoing budget revisions across multiple programs and funding sources.

· Maintain strong internal controls, safeguards, and fiscal procedures for receipts, expenditures, cost allocations, and grant compliance.

· Prepare financial reporting materials for government, foundation, and corporate funders, ensuring accuracy and timeliness

· Monitor and manage agency cash flow, loan activity, and liquidity needs on an ongoing basis.

· Coordinate all external audits, including the agency’s annual audit and audits required by funding agencies; ensure timely responses and implementation of findings.

· Ensure all finance practices, record keeping, and reporting comply with funding regulations and CAB policies.

· Oversee grants accounting throughout the grant cycle, ensuring expenditures align with program budgets, allowable costs, and reporting deadlines.

· Maintain current knowledge of regulatory requirements by Uniform Guides and implement updates to policies and procedures as needed.

· Oversee day-to-day fiscal operations, including payroll, A/P, A/R, purchasing, general ledger, taxes, and related accounting functions.

· Enhance and integrate financial systems with HR and IT to improve accuracy, efficiency, and automation.

· Develop and maintain financial databases, reporting tools, spreadsheets, and workflows to support high-quality financial analysis.

· Partner with program directors to assess financial performance, support decision-making, and optimize cost-effective service delivery.

· Supervise, coach, train, and evaluate accounting staff to ensure excellent performance and adherence to fiscal timelines, accuracy, and compliance.

· Promote effective communication and collaboration with program staff, leadership, HR, and IT, fostering a positive and solutions-oriented work environment.

· Provide financial guidance and technical assistance to program directors, managers, and administrative teams.

· Serve as fiscal liaison between programs and administrative departments.

· Conduct special financial analyses, modeling, and studies as requested.

· Support presentations to internal leadership, board committees, and other stakeholders (finance and audit committees, government partners, etc.)

· Participate in Directors’ Meetings and cross-department workgroups as required.

· Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

· Bilingual/Bi-literate preferred, excellent English & Spanish written and verbal communication skills.

· 5 years+ of fund accounting/budgeting experience managing multiple million-dollar budgets OR BA/BS in accounting/finance or related field

· Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and produce professional, detailed products, projects, and communications in a timely manner.

· Expertise with financial software; QuickBooks required, MIP preferred

· High proficiency in Microsoft Excel and advanced spreadsheet modeling.

· Ability to design reporting tools and systems that minimize manual work and maximize efficiency.

· Strong understanding of GAAP, Uniform guides, internal controls, and nonprofit fund accounting.

· Strong experience in nonprofit financial management, including funding accounting, compliance, and financial reporting.

· Experience leading audits, preparing financial statements, and managing payroll, A/P, A/R, and general ledger functions.

· Ability to quickly create and maintain organizational systems, analyze situations, prioritize, and create action plans to accomplish multiple time sensitive and at times confidential tasks in a timely manner.

· Ability to project a professional demeanor and competently deliver presentations.

· Ability to work on a computer for long periods of time, bend, reach and safely lift 25 pounds+ on a consistent basis.

· Ability to work flexible schedule including occasional evenings and weekends.

· Valid California driver license with an excellent driving record and an insured vehicle.
