Job Title: Area Phlebotomy Supervisor
Overview
The Area Phlebotomy Supervisor is responsible for managing the mobile phlebotomy lab service within the assigned region, to ensure delivery of excellent client and patient service, and manage workflow of the phlebotomy staff efficiently and accurately. The area supervisor is responsible for leading a team of mobile phlebotomists in concert with the direction of the management team. Primary areas of responsibility include setting service schedules for phlebotomists to ensure adequate coverage to complete client collections, routine monitoring of service quality and employee performance for adherence to policies and procedures, and regular reporting and collaboration with the management team. Supervisors personally perform collections as well, as needed.
Area Supervisor Job Duties
Scheduling

Creates a schedule for the assigned region in which employees are assigned in regular shifts at a level to adequately cover client service requests – regular and unplanned – 7 days a week.

Provides timely/weekly phlebotomy schedule assignments to phlebotomy staff and dispatch staff.

Be accessible by phone or assign a proxy when unavailable.

Effectively communicates with Dispatchers regularly regarding schedule changes and issues regarding orders, phlebotomist’s assignments.
Leading / Hiring / Training
-
Involvement in interviewing applicants for open positions, onboarding new employees, verifying completion of all required new hire paperwork prior to beginning training, training and documentation prior to sending them out on their own.

Ability to assist new phlebotomists in completion of training checklist.

Ability to utilize coaching methods which provide an environment that is participatory, supportive and provides constructive feedback on performance.
Monitor Staff Performance

Verifies that all phlebotomists correctly obtain process and transport specimens according to policies/procedures at least on a weekly basis and documents.

Monitoring that all facilities have been collected during AM run and specimens get to the Laboratory in a timely manner via phlebotomy team or courier.

Ensures that phlebotomy supply and specimen processing area is neat and organized at all times.

Audits their assigned phlebotomists’ test requisitions paperwork weekly to assure they consistently complete each form/log/requisition completely and correctly as required.

Monitors their assigned phlebotomists’ timecards and daily performance reports to verify completion and compliance and manage department staffing within corporate target hours and expense for the pay period.

Regularly audits daily performance reports to verify staffing level is adequate and efficient in assigned routes, and adjust routes as needed to keep mileage as low as possible.

Provides timely performance feedback and writes up warnings according to policy when necessary.
Customer Service

Communicates promptly and efficiently with Phlebotomy Manager and Customer Service Manager regarding client questions, concerns and complaints.
Other Management Duties

Keeps the Phlebotomy Manager informed of any employee issues (counseling, need for hiring or firing) and for annual evaluation purposes.

Ability to attend scheduled meetings with Phlebotomy Manager, Phlebotomy Supervisors and Phlebotomy Quality Manager.

Maintains current and accurate Mobile Phlebotomist’s contact information.
-
Maintains accurate attendance records for phlebotomists.
-
Other duties as required.
Supervisor
An appointed Phlebotomy Manager of NICL Laboratories will be the direct line supervisor for this position. The laboratory manager and HR have sole authority to make changes to the conditions of employment.
Hours
Vary. Rotating weekends and holidays are required.
Performance Evaluation
Periodic training reviews and performance evaluations will be performed to assess quality and productivity.
Minimum Requirements

Requires a minimum of two years’ experience in phlebotomy, and at least 6 months of phlebotomy experience with NICL Laboratories.

Valid driver’s license and valid insurance/registration.
-
Demonstrates clean driving record within existing company policy.
-
Must pass a drug screen and background check.
-
Must provide his/her own transportation and be able to travel from location to location in accordance with his/her daily assigned schedule.
-
Must have verbal communication skills to effectively interact with their staff, clients, management and technical staff in the laboratory.
-
No disciplinary actions within the last year including attendance counseling.
-
Good observation skills, able to demonstrate the ability to be nonjudgmental of staff.
-
Must exhibit a positive attitude and commitment to quality patient care.
-
Understands and follows NICL Laboratories policies and procedures.
-
Able to handle self in calm manner in stressful situations.
-
Ability to analyze situations accurately and able to take effective action.

Demonstrates good organizational skills to make sure all routes are covered at all times.

Demonstrates appreciation and understanding of budgetary responsibility.
Education Requirements
-
High School Diploma or equivalent.
-
Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program, or adequate phlebotomy experience.
-
Must be thoroughly versed in NICL policies and procedures with emphasis on specimen collection, processing and transport.
-
Must be able to use a computer (emails, Microsoft Word/Excel, etc).
-
Required to pass yearly competency validation.
-
Ability to update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining professional networks; and participation in professional organizations.
