Job Title: Controls Engineer

Job Description

The Controls Engineer designs, assembles, and integrates electrical control cabinets and panels in a highly automated manufacturing environment. This role supports the Automation Engineering team by developing and modifying electrical systems, integrating new equipment, and collaborating closely with maintenance and external technicians to ensure reliable, efficient operation of industrial automation equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Design, assemble, and integrate electrical control panels and cabinets for industrial automation equipment.
  • Use AutoCAD Electrical to develop, edit, and maintain detailed drawings of electrical systems.
  • Install electronic equipment, machinery, measuring devices, and testing equipment on the production floor.
  • Develop wiring diagrams, layout drawings, and engineering specifications to support system modifications, upgrades, and expansions.
  • Program and troubleshoot control systems, including PLCs and related automation equipment.
  • Utilize the Maintenance Information Management System to log technical repairs, improvements, and system changes.
  • Work in close collaboration with the Maintenance department to diagnose and resolve electrical and control system issues.
  • Assist in the integration of new automation and vision equipment into existing manufacturing processes.
  • Coordinate with external technicians and vendors to ensure proper installation, commissioning, and performance of new equipment.
  • Support preventive maintenance activities by providing electrical and controls expertise.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on increasing automation and system reliability.

Essential Skills

  • Associate degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Automation, or at least 2+ years of relevant experience in a similar role.
  • Minimum of 1+ years of hands-on experience in an industrial environment.
  • Experience programming and troubleshooting industrial control systems.
  • Working knowledge of Siemens and Allen-Bradley PLCs.
  • Experience with CNC troubleshooting and Fanuc controls.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical for developing and editing electrical drawings.
  • Strong electrical troubleshooting skills for machinery and control systems.
  • Experience with electrical wiring, control equipment, and electrical cabinets.
  • Understanding of control systems, HMI, and controls engineering principles.
  • Ability to read and develop wiring diagrams, schematics, and layout drawings.
  • Familiarity with preventive maintenance practices in an industrial setting.
  • Ability to work effectively with maintenance teams and external technicians.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience troubleshooting CNC controls, particularly Fanuc systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical and hydraulic schematics.
  • Mechanical assembly experience related to automation equipment.
  • Experience in electrical engineering or related technical disciplines.
  • Experience working with a Maintenance Information Management System.
  • Interest in automation, vision systems, and continuous improvement projects.
  • Desire and ability to grow into more advanced engineering opportunities within an automation-focused team.

Work Environment

This role is based in a large, clean manufacturing facility that is currently about 20% automated, with a strong focus on increasing automation through the implementation of new equipment in the near future. The position operates on a first-shift schedule, typically from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, with minimal overtime and no weekend work. The Controls Engineer works closely with a small, collaborative Automation Department that includes a controls engineer, quality engineer, mechanical design engineer, and manufacturing engineer. The environment offers extensive hands-on exposure to industrial automation and vision equipment, along with opportunities for professional growth as additional engineering roles open within the automation team.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bluffton, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $31.25 - $38.46/hr.
