Our client, a prestigious AmLaw 200 law firm headquartered in Baltimore, is seeking an experienced Controller to lead its Accounting Operations within the Finance Department. This is an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned accounting professional with a strong leadership background and a passion for driving process improvement in a complex, service-driven organization.
The Controller will oversee all aspects of the firm’s financial operations, including Billing, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, and Collections, while partnering closely with firm leadership to ensure strategic and operational alignment across departments.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee accounting managers and staff responsible for billing, A/P, A/R, payroll, and collections.
- Maintain strong relationships with attorneys and partners to ensure timely and accurate billing and collections.
- Lead the monthly close and reconciliation processes, ensuring accuracy and compliance with firm and regulatory standards.
- Manage external audits and oversee the integrity of accounting controls.
- Review and approve payment runs, journal entries, and payroll transactions.
- Mentor and develop accounting team members, setting clear performance expectations.
- Partner with leadership on financial analysis, reporting, and process improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; CPA preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in professional services or law firm environments.
- Advanced knowledge of general ledger, A/P, A/R, payroll, and financial reporting processes.
- Strong technical proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word) and financial systems; LMS experience a plus.
- Proven success managing large teams in a deadline-driven setting.
- Exceptional organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
