Degree in American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting, certified ASL Interpreter credentials, and 1+ year of experience as an ASL Interpreter in educational settings. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.

A school-based role is available for a Sign Language Interpreter to support K-12 students in the Virginia Beach area. This full-time position involves providing interpretation services primarily to elementary-aged students in a 1:1 setting within the public school system. Interpreters are not tied to a single campus and may be assigned to various locations to cover when students are absent. Part-time and itinerant roles may also be considered.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide high-quality sign language interpretation for students requiring communication access in classroom and related school activities
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, staff, and families to support student communication needs
  • Utilize preferred communication methods such as Visaphonics when appropriate, though this is not mandatory
  • Maintain professional standards and confidentiality in all interactions

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Must hold Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III certification
  • Preferred EIPA score of 3.5 or higher; candidates with a score above 3.0 or VQAS Score of 3 or better are also considered
  • Ability to work with elementary school-aged children in an educational environment
  • Flexibility to support multiple school locations as needed

Position Details:

  • Location: Virginia Beach vicinity (Norfolk, VA area)
  • Schedule: Full-time, Monday through Friday, approximately 35 hours per week
  • Duration: Contract through the current school year
  • Caseload: Typically 1:1 student assignments, number of schools assigned to be determined
