Sarasota County Land Development Services is seeking a motivated professional who’s passionate about flood protection, water resources, and ensuring development complies with state and local regulations. In this role, you’ll review drainage plans and permits, conduct property inspections, and support Land Development Inspectors while working closely with a Land Development Professional Engineer. Your work will play an important part in protecting our community and natural resources as Sarasota County continues to grow.
Depending on your experience, this position can be offered at the Tier II or Tier III level with the starting pay ranging from $22.94/hr up to $26.50/hr. Benefits begin within 60 days of hire, and there are opportunities for advancement. About the Position
If selected, you will...
- Review all lot drainage plans submitted to Land Development as part of the building permit process for compliance with the Unified Development Code.
- Provide on-site inspections of private, public, and county-owned property; ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, statutes, and County ordinances.
- Offer backup support for Land Development Inspectors in their inspection activities.
- Provide support in the review of site development permit plans and right-of-way use permits.
About the Schedule
Work Hours:
- Full-Time, 40 hours per week.
- Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (No weekends!)
About You
To be considered for this role, you must have the following:
Compliance/Maintenance Specialist - Tier II
- High School Diploma or its equivalent and 3+ years of total related experience in inspections.
- OR: College or University level training in Science, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a highly related field (i.e. Storm Water, Water Management, etc.) may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
- Florida Department of Environmental Protection Stormwater, Erosion, and Sedimentation Control Inspector Certification or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire. (We can help with this!)
- Valid Florida driver's license at the time of hire.
Compliance/Maintenance Specialist - Tier III
- High School Diploma or its equivalent and 4+ years of total experience in inspecting.
- OR: College or university-level training in an appropriate field may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
- Florida Department of Environmental Protection Stormwater, Erosion, and Sedimentation Control Inspector Certification.
- Valid Florida driver's license at the time of hire.
The ideal candidate has the following:

- Ability to read, understand, and accurately interpret subdivision and drainage plan specifications.
- Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in drainage structure construction.
- Understanding of stormwater hydrology and hydraulics, including surveying, construction methods, scheduling, and pavement design.
Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.
About Everything Else
Tier II: Starting Pay Range: $22.94 - $23.86/hr, based on your experience.
Tier III: Starting Pay Range: $24.74 - $26.50/hr, based on your experience.
