Job DescriptionJob Summary
The Structural Welder/Fitter is responsible for fitting, fabricating, and welding structural steel components according to blueprints and specifications. This role requires strong layout, fitting, and welding skills to ensure all work meets safety, quality, and project requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and structural specifications
- Fit and assemble structural steel components including beams, columns, plates, stairs, handrails, and frames
- Perform welding using approved processes (SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, or SAW as required)
- Accurately measure, cut, tack, and align materials prior to welding
- Use tools such as grinders, torches, saws, levels, squares, and layout equipment
- Ensure welds meet AWS and project quality standards
- Inspect completed work for accuracy and structural soundness
- Follow all safety policies and OSHA regulations
- Maintain clean and organized work areas
- Communicate with supervisors, inspectors, and other trades as needed
- Assist with troubleshooting fit-up or fabrication issues
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience as a Structural Welder/Fitter
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and welding symbols
- Strong knowledge of structural steel fabrication and erection practices
- Proficiency in at least one welding process (stick, flux-core, MIG)
- Ability to pass welding tests per AWS or company standards
- Solid understanding of job-site safety requirements
- Dependable with strong attention to detail
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
- AWS certification (D1.1 or equivalent)
- Experience with flux-core welding on structural steel
- NCCER certification
- Experience working in fabrication shops and/or field erection
- OSHA 10 or 30 certification
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50–75 lbs
- Frequent standing, bending, climbing, and kneeling
- Ability to work at heights and in various weather conditions
- Manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination

This is a Contract position based out of Tuscaloosa, AL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $32.00 - $34.00/hr.
