Job Summary:
The Nurse Midwife is a licensed, independent practitioner who provides gynecological and obstetrical care to patients including preconception, antepartum, postpartum, contraception, and gynecologic care. When indicated, consults and collaborates with OBGYN physician, CMO, other providers and other health care staff to provide medical care, treatment, and counseling to patients. Participates in initial examination of obstetrical patient and is assigned responsibility for care and treatment of patient. Examines patient during pregnancy, utilizing physical findings, laboratory test results, and patient's statements to evaluate condition and ensure that patient's progress is normal. Discusses cases with Obstetrician to assure observation of specified practices. Instructs patient in diet and prenatal health practices. When deviations from standard are encountered during pregnancy, administers stipulated emergency measures, and arranges for immediate contact of Obstetrician. Conducts classes for groups of patients and families to provide information concerning pregnancy, childbirth, and family orientation. Performs postpartum examinations and treatments to ensure that patient is responding normally. Performs family planning counseling and preconception services including placement of IUDs and other implants, patches, oral, and injectable contraceptive methods.
Essential Job Responsibilities:

- Obtains and documents health history and assess the impact on the patient’s pregnancy and delivery.
- Provides patient care based on practice guidelines standards of care and federal/state laws and regulations.
- Performs pap smears
- Arranges for laboratory testing during pregnancy
- Advises patient on diet, exercise, and the effects of the environment and certain behaviors on the unborn child
- Educates patients about the birth process. Educates patients and families about pregnancy, health status and maintaining a healthful pregnancy.
- Monitors for complications during pregnancy and problem solve as needed to ensure the safety of both the mother and child
- Consults with Obstetrician and other health providers, and community resources to prevent/resolve problems or concerns. Refers high risk cases.
- Documents patient assessment, pregnancy progress and intervention and testing data using established EMR and documentation practices.
- Keeps accurate health records and complete reports as required by law.
- Participates in multidisciplinary teams to improve patient care processes and outcomes. Tracks quality assurance data and monitors prenatal and routine care management.
Requirements:
Education and/or Experience:
BSN with advanced practice skills as a Nurse Midwife.
Candidate must be a licensed Certified Nurse Midwife
Three years' experience as a midwife in a private practice, hospital or health center setting.
Language Skills:
Bilingual skills preferred (English/Spanish)
Performance Requirements:
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of nursing and OB/GYN processes; health care systems, structure and functions; community resources, hospitals.
- Understanding of OB/Gyn technology, equipment and supplies.
- Knowledge of wellness, illness, pregnancy complications, growth and development, human behavior, psychosocial factors and alternative health care treatments that are ethnically predominant.
- Knowledge of medical record documentation requirements, and federal/state laws regarding release of medical records or health care information
Skills:
- Skill in time management, problem solving, multitasking, prioritizing and medical care coordination.
- Skill in initiating appropriate crisis interventions and emergency response
- Skills in patient triage in person and on the phone.
- Skill in dealing with large quantities of information in an organized manner.
- Skill in using computer and medical records software.
- Skill in posting all pertinent information, laboratory and test results information into EMR, meeting Center standards for timeliness.
Abilities:
- Ability to analyze options and counsel patients and families about choices and make referrals to other providers and resources.
- Ability to engage patients and families in the development and implementation of a care plan.
- Ability to read and interpret physician/obstetrician orders and notes from other providers.
- Ability to use excellent interpersonal skills in building rapport, trust, and patient centered care.
- Ability to analyze data, promptly review and post laboratory and test result.
- Ability to analyze medical records for completeness and accuracy, paying attention to detail.
- Ability to manage time and appointment scheduling effectively.
Equipment Operated:
Wide range of standard medical equipment including portable Ultrasound equipment, syringes, speculum, oxygen tanks, wheelchairs, thermometers, etc. Computer use and proficiency required.
Work Environment:
Medical exam/treatment rooms and medical offices in Health Center. Controlled lighting, air quality, and temperature settings. Environmental hazards may be unpredictable including exposure to communicable diseases and biohazards.
Mental/Physical Requirements:
Involves standing, walking, kneeling, bending, grasping, manipulating and squatting and lifting (up to 50 lbs.). Walking or standing may be more than four (4) hours per day. Must be able to work in a standard medical office setting including use of a computer, and standard office equipment. Must have ability to read computer screens, printed materials and hearing and speech to communicate in person as well as over the phone. Must be able to attend meetings or make presentations at various sites when required. Stress can be triggered by an individual’s response to workload or specific cases.
