Position OverviewSahale Outdoors is seeking enthusiastic and reliable Afterschool Outdoor Education Instructors to lead nature-based activities for up to 15 students in Tacoma Public Schools. This is a part-time position (5–12 hours per week) ideal for individuals who enjoy working with youth, are organized, and can bring creativity and energy to the classroom and outdoors.
Responsibilities
- Lead afterschool programs for elementary or middle school students, following Sahale Outdoors’ curriculum.
- Teach engaging, hands-on lessons on topics such as shelter building, fire starting, first aid, and nature exploration.
- Create a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.
- Adapt curriculum as needed to meet the interests and energy of the group.
- Supervise up to 15 students and ensure safety at all times.
- Maintain communication with Sahale Outdoors staff regarding program needs, successes, and challenges.
- Arrive prepared and on time for all scheduled sessions.
Qualifications
- Passion for working with youth and helping them connect with nature.
- Strong classroom or group management skills.
- Organized and able to adapt on the fly to keep students engaged.
- No prior experience in outdoor survival skills required—training and curriculum provided.
- Reliable transportation to assigned Tacoma Public School sites.
- Ability to pass a background check (required for working with children).
Compensation
- Hourly rate: $18-20/hr
- Training provided for all curriculum topics.
