Summary:
The Middle School Spanish Teacher is responsible for designing and implementing a dynamic Spanish language curriculum for students in grades 6-8. The teacher will create an engaging, student-centered learning environment that fosters language acquisition, cultural understanding, and global awareness. Using immersive and proficiency-based instructional methods, the teacher will help students develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Spanish.
Responsibilities:
Instruction & Curriculum Development:
- Develop and implement a rigorous and developmentally appropriate Spanish language curriculum aligned with the school’s mission and academic standards.
- Use a communicative, proficiency-based approach to language instruction, incorporating listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
- Employ diverse and engaging teaching strategies, including storytelling, role-playing, project-based learning, literature, and authentic cultural experiences.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with varying levels of Spanish proficiency.
Classroom Management & Student Engagement:
- Foster a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages risk-taking in language learning.
- Utilize assessments, both formative and summative, to measure student progress and inform instruction.
- Maintain high expectations for student engagement, participation, and behavior.
Collaboration & Community Engagement:
- Work closely with fellow faculty members to integrate Spanish into cross-disciplinary projects and school-wide initiatives.
- Communicate regularly with students, parents, and advisors regarding student progress, including parent-teacher conferences and progress report writing..
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development opportunities, and school community events.
Other
- Serve as a middle school advisor, providing academic and social-emotional guidance.
- Attend grade-level meetings and collaborate with colleagues on student support strategies.
- Supervise and participate in lunch, recess, and other duties as part of school responsibilities.
- Attend and support students during Outdoor Education trips for the middle school/advisory grade level.
Requirements:
Required Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Spanish, Education, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
- Fluency in Spanish and proficiency in English.
- Experience teaching middle school students, preferably in an independent school setting.
- Strong understanding of language acquisition pedagogy and best practices for adolescent learners.
Working Conditions:
- 80% Indoors, 20% outdoors
- Ability to move around the school and playground to attend to individual operational and other matters
- Occasional requirement to lift more than 30 lbs
- Sit for an extended amount of time
