SALARY

POSITION OVERVIEW
CakeBoxx Technologies designs and manufactures patented two-piece deck-and-lid intermodal containers, deployable platforms, and containerized Systems Within SystemsTM solutions for defense, aerospace, energy, and high-technology customers. These systems operate in demanding environments where structural integrity, weatherproofing, and integrated subsystem performance are critical.
The Senior Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring that every container, platform, and integrated system meets defined quality, functionality, and conformance to applicable military and industry standards. This position works closely with CakeBoxx's Engineering team — including the engineers assigned to each build — to verify that welding, materials, dimensional features (including hole sizes, hole locations, and tolerances), and overall construction conform to engineering drawings and specifications before products are tested, accepted, and shipped.
This position works closely with CakeBoxx's Program Management Office (PMO) to ensure each build is completed on time and to quality standards, and works closely with the on-the-ground CakeBoxx engineer at the manufacturing partner's facility to ensure all products are completed with quality. When a third-party inspector identifies a defect or anomaly, this role partners with the on-the-ground engineer to drive corrective actions through to full completion.
This is a hands-on role requiring regular travel to our manufacturing partner's facility, strong technical judgment, and the ability to lead quality-related activities across the full product lifecycle.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Manufacturing Partner Oversight
• Ensure that all products built by our manufacturing partner conform to engineering drawings, specifications, and functional requirements
• Provide quality oversight and support at the manufacturing partner's facility, including inspection oversight, defect identification, and issue resolution
• Verify that welding, materials, fastener hardware, and dimensional features — including hole sizes, hole locations, and tolerances — conform to engineering drawings and specifications during in-process and final inspection
• Review material certifications (mill certs / material test reports) for traceability and conformance to specified grades and standards
• Verify as-built configuration against the released Bill of Materials (BOM) and Technical Data Package (TDP); flag undocumented deviations for Engineering Change Request (ECR) review
• Audit and verify the manufacturing partner's calibration program for inspection, measuring, and test equipment (gauges, calipers, micrometers, CMM)
Product Verification and Testing
• Develop and execute test procedures, inspection methods, and acceptance criteria to verify product functionality and performance
• Perform and oversee functional testing, system-level testing, and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
• Verify functional integration of onboard subsystems — electrical, HVAC, and hydraulic/pneumatic actuation — across CakeBoxx's Systems Within SystemsTM platforms
• Verify structural and dimensional conformance to specification for container and platform components, including corner castings/fittings, lifting points, and stacking interfaces
• Inspect coating and corrosion protection (surface preparation, dry film thickness) for conformance to specification
• Conduct watertight and weatherproof seal inspection on doors, hatches, and access points
• Ensure all products meet engineering requirements, specifications, and operational performance expectations prior to shipment
• Analyze test and inspection data to identify failure modes and drive corrective actions
• Support field issue investigations and confirm effectiveness of corrective actions through re-testing and verification
• Monitor weld quality and inspection for conformance to applicable AWS standards (e.g., D1.1, D14.3), coordinating destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) as required, including at manufacturing partner sites
• Support First Article Inspection (FAI) activities in accordance with AS9102 where required by customer or contract specifications
Non-Conformance and Corrective Action Management
• Initiate and maintain the Non-Conformance Report (NCR) log; document, disposition, and track non-conforming material to closure
• Lead structured root cause investigations for production defects, customer issues, and test failures using methodologies including 8D, 5 Why analysis, and FMEA
• Own the CAPA log; develop, implement, and track corrective and preventive actions to closure
• Monitor effectiveness of corrective actions and ensure sustainable resolution
Process Control and Continuous Improvement
• Develop and maintain quality control plans, inspection methods, and work instructions
• Implement and monitor Statistical Process Control (SPC) and other data-driven tools
• Analyze production data to identify trends and improve scrap, rework, and process capability
• Lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance quality and efficiency
Quality Systems and Compliance
• Maintain and improve the Quality Management System (QMS) in accordance with ISO 9001 requirements
• Conduct internal audits and support external and customer audits
• Ensure documentation, traceability, and compliance with quality system requirements across manufacturing partner operations
New Product Introduction and Engineering Support
• Participate in design reviews to assess quality risks and manufacturability
• Support new product introductions through validation planning, process development, and inspection readiness
• Ensure the manufacturing partner's production processes are capable and validated prior to production release
Supplier Quality and Collaboration
• Coordinate and collaborate with Program Management (PMO) to ensure quality targets are met across design, manufacturing, test, and service/maintenance
• Work closely with Program Managers and Engineers to ensure builds are executed to quality standards, materials procurement and the Bill of Materials (BOM) are correct, and quality milestones are integrated into the program's Integrated Master Schedule (IMS)
• Support supplier quality activities including inspections and corrective actions
• Collaborate with Engineering, the manufacturing partner, and Supply Chain to resolve quality issues
• Act as a point of contact for quality-related escalations
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, or related)
• 5–8+ years of manufacturing quality engineering experience
• Strong experience in root cause methodologies, SPC, FMEA, CAPA, and GD&T
• Experience developing and executing test procedures and product verification methods
• Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and engineering drawings
• Working knowledge of ISO 9001 and audit processes
• Ability to work hands-on within a manufacturing partner's production environment and influence cross-functional teams
• U.S. Citizenship required
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Military background, particularly U.S. Navy or other defense branch experience, is a strong plus
• ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or Six Sigma certification
• Experience in fabrication, structural systems, or heavy assemblies
• Experience with Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
• Background in aerospace, defense, or industrial manufacturing
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Primary work location is CakeBoxx's McLean, VA headquarters, with regular travel to the manufacturing partner's facility for inspection, audit, and acceptance testing support
• During site visits, extended periods of standing and walking on the production floor should be expected
• Exposure to typical industrial conditions during site visits, including noise, dust, and moving equipment
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) required in designated production areas while on-site at the manufacturing partner's facility
BENEFITS
• Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance
• 401(k) with company match
• Paid Time Off
• Short- and Long-Term Disability Insurance
• Tuition reimbursement and professional development opportunities
• Performance-based incentives
