Job DescriptionThe Medical Laboratory Scientist – Traveler is responsible for performing high-complexity laboratory testing while ensuring accuracy, quality, and compliance with regulatory standards. This role supports patient care through reliable diagnostic results and collaboration with laboratory and clinical teams.Key Responsibilities
- Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, testing, and reporting
- Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures and department SOPs
- Review, verify, and release test results
- Maintain proficiency testing records equivalent to patient specimen handling
- Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety guidelines
- Perform and document quality control (QC), calibrations, and maintenance
- Identify testing issues, implement corrective actions, or escalate as needed
- Report STAT and critical results according to departmental protocols
- Maintain complete and accurate testing records
- Ensure proper reagent labeling, dating, and expiration tracking
- Participate in training, departmental meetings, and safety sessions
- Support inspections by regulatory or government agencies when required
- Maintain a professional department appearance
- Perform additional duties as assigned by supervision
Required Skills & KnowledgeRequired
- Solid understanding of clinical laboratory testing
- Knowledge of QC and QA procedures
- Ability to work across multiple laboratory disciplines
- Strong computer and LIS proficiency
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple procedures simultaneously
Preferred
- Experience in high-complexity testing environments
- Traveler or multi-site laboratory experience

- Commitment to patient confidentiality and data protection
Education & Certification
- Preferred: BS in Medical Technology
- Accepted Alternatives:
- BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology
- Associate degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology
- Previously qualified as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433
- Certification: National certification required or eligible (ASCP or AMT)
- Licensure: National and state licensure as required
- Foreign Education: Credential evaluation from IERF
- U.S. Education: Original detailed transcripts required
Work Experience
- Preferred: 1 year of clinical laboratory experience (high-complexity testing)
- Required for BS/BA (Chemistry/Biology): Minimum 1 year in high-complexity clinical testing

- Ability to establish priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Interaction with internal departments and external clients
- Strict adherence to confidentiality and compliance standards
