CONTRACT WELDER JOB DESCRIPTION (Travel + Per Diem | 4–6 Month Contract)
Job Title: Contract Welder / Fabricator (Travel + Per Diem)
Contract Duration: 4–6 Months (extensions possible)
Hours: 7am – 4pm (1st Shift) or 3:30pm – Midnight (2nd Shift)
Primary Worksite:
3100 Lake Shore Rd, Buffalo, NY 14219 (Lackawanna Facility)
Eligible Home Locations (must live 50+ miles away):
Rochester, NY • Batavia, NY • Jamestown, NY • Fredonia, NY • Dunkirk, NY • Erie, PA • Bradford, PA • Olean, NY • Syracuse outer region • Niagara County outer region
Employment Type: Contract (1099)
Compensation:
- $40–$48/hr (based on weld test and experience)
- $130/day tax-free per diem
About the Role
GTI Fabrication is seeking experienced Contract Welders for modular steel fabrication projects at our Lackawanna manufacturing site. We offer higher-than-market contractor pay, tax-free per diem, and consistent full-time hours for welders living 50+ miles outside Buffalo, in accordance with IRS distance-based per diem standards.
Per Diem Eligibility (Important)
Contractors must maintain a permanent residence 50+ miles from Buffalo, NY to qualify for tax-free per diem under standard construction industry guidelines and IRS “away from tax home” rules.
Key Responsibilities
- MIG/GMAW welding on structural steel, frames, brackets, and modular units
- Fit, tack, assemble, and weld components to engineering specifications
- Perform welds in 3G/4G and positional orientations
- Read and interpret detailed mechanical drawings and weld symbols
- Use grinders, torches, and fabrication tools
- Conduct self-inspections to ensure AWS-level weld quality
- Maintain adherence to all GTI safety policies and manufacturing standards
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years MIG welding experience
- Ability to pass a 3G and/or 4G weld test
- Strong blueprint reading and measurement accuracy
- Must have welding hood, gloves, and basic tools
- Must live 50+ miles outside Buffalo to qualify for per diem
Preferred Qualifications
- AWS certification (3G/4G, D1.1)
- Modular fabrication or heavy steel experience
- STICK or TIG welding experience
Compensation
- $40–$48/hr (based on weld test and experience)
- $130/day tax-free per diem
- Minimum 40 hours/week
- Weekly pay; OT available
