Job Description

The Town of Falmouth is seeking a responsible and motivated individual age 18 or older to join our Conservation Division as a Seasonal Conservation Technician. This is an excellent opportunity to spend the summer working outdoors while gaining hands-on experience in land management, habitat restoration, and environmental fieldwork, supporting the stewardship and protection of Falmouth’s conservation lands, natural resources, and public open spaces alongside Conservation staff and volunteers. This role is especially well-suited for students and early-career professionals seeking field experience in environmental science or natural resource management.

This seasonal position works 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., from mid- to late May through mid- to late August or later, with optional weekend work (Saturday or Sunday) as needed based on project schedules.

Under the direction of the Conservation Land Manager, the Seasonal Conservation Technician performs manual and semi-skilled work related to the maintenance and improvement of Town-owned conservation lands. Responsibilities include:

  • Mowing, weed-whacking, and trimming brush along trails and conservation areas;
  • Removing, managing, and properly disposing of invasive vegetation;
  • Seeding, raking, and maintaining naturalized and restored areas;
  • Collecting refuse and helping maintain clean and accessible conservation lands;
  • Assisting with the installation and repair of benches, fences, signage, and trail infrastructure;
  • Identifying plant species and monitoring natural resource conditions;
  • Monitoring conservation areas for encroachments and reporting findings;
  • Photographing project sites and documenting progress;
  • Collecting and entering field data to support conservation and land management projects;
  • Operating Town vehicles, hand tools, and power equipment;
  • Assisting with the coordination of projects involving staff, volunteers, and other Town departments; and
  • Performing other related work as needed.

This is an active outdoor position involving physical work in a variety of weather conditions and terrain, including wooded areas, trails, and conservation lands. Work may include walking long distances, lifting materials, and operating landscaping and maintenance equipment.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, hold a valid driver’s license, and be able to pass a pre-employment CORI background check. Candidates must be able to safely operate basic hand and power tools and perform physically active outdoor work in varying conditions.

Candidates with an interest in environmental studies, land management, conservation, or related fields are encouraged to apply. Previous experience in landscaping, trail maintenance, or outdoor fieldwork is helpful but not required.

Starting Hourly Rate: Step 1 ($22.39/hour) up to Step 3 ($24.69/hour), commensurate with qualifications and experience, for the first season of employment, with opportunities for advancement along the 5-step wage schedule in subsequent seasons. This is a seasonal, non-benefit-eligible position.

Preference Date to Apply: Monday, April 6, 2026 by 4:30 p.m. The positions will remain open until filled, but candidates who apply by this date and time will be given preference over later applications.
