POSITION SUMMARY
The Scrub Technologist assists the surgical team during operative procedures. Understands and applies principles of asepsis. Arranges the sterile set-up for procedures and passes instruments and supplies to the OR team. ST anticipates the surgeons’ needs in such a manner that the surgeon need not divert his attention form the operative field. ST assists in preparing and moving patients and cleaning/sterilizing instruments and the operating room. The ST is responsible for the provision of surgical care to meet identified patient outcomes and to achieve facility goals as directed by the Registered Nurse.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY
- Prepares/assembles equipment, instrumentation, and supplies for upcoming casesin accordance withthe physician’s preference cards.
- Prepares the autoclaves, operating rooms, and the work rooms at the beginning of each day
- Monitorsautoclaves and all SPD equipment daily, including biological and steam penetration testing, and completesappropriate documentationin accordance withregulatory standards
- Cleans autoclaves and SPD equipmentin accordance withmanufacturer guidelines
- Damp dusts all SPD flat surfaces daily and all flat surfaces and lights in the operating rooms prior to opening sterile packs
- Assistswith the preparation of the operating room for surgical procedures
- Assistswith gowning and gloving members of the surgical team
- Assistswith the care, preparation, maintenance and after-care of sterile and unsterile supplies and equipment
- Knows and practices the principles and techniques of sterile/aseptic technique
- Handles specimensin accordance withprocedures
- Participatesin sponge, instrument, and needle counts with the circulating nurse
- Removes drapes at the end of procedures, cleanses the patient of prepsolutionand applies dressing as needed
- Respects patient’s privacy, dignity, and confidentiality
- Recognizes legal and policy limits of individual responsibility
- Demonstratesability to respond to patient care and operating room needs inan emergency situation
- Assistswith room turnovers
- Cleans instruments and equipment after use and returns it to the proper area for processing or storage
- Assistswith housekeeping duties as necessary to provide a safe environment
- Demonstratesthe ability to understand and usevarious typesof equipment used to clean and/or sterilize instrumentation
- Updates physician preference cards, as necessary
- Participatesin the Quality Program, as directed by supervisor
- Performs other duties as may be appropriatelyrequiredor assigned
- Provides clinical skills necessary to provide quality care according to patient’s age and stage of growth and development
SKILLS
- Requires frequent and constant judgment, leadership, and the ability to make decisions and solve problemsimmediately; occasionally in response to disasters or emergencies, actualeventsor drills.
- Requires English language skills for constant high-level written and interpersonal communications.
- Ability to work well with physicians, employees, patients, and others.
COMPETENCIES
- Good visual acuity,accuratecolor vision.
- Ability to lift/transfer patients in excess of 100 pounds, which may require pushing, pulling and essentially utilizing a full range of body movement.
- Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl.
- Ability to reach, grasp, use fine finger movement and feel fine sensation to discern temperature, texture,sizeand shape.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: High school diploma; Graduate of a recognized and accredited Surgical Technologist Program, preferred
- Certification: Current Surgical Technologist Certification is preferred, or two years of experience as a Surgical Technologist
- Successful completion of BLS (Basic Life Support)
- Experience: Minimum two years of experience in the operating room as a Surgical Technologist
